As most of you know, I have been one of Hartley's biggest defenders on this board. I have believed in him and defended him missed kick after missed kick. I have defended him for three years. I can't defend him any more. Like someone else said, he's a head case. He is now indefensible. I really thought Hartley was going to be another Morton Anderson, but, I'm like some of you others, I cringe when he gets up to kick. I can't take it anymore.

Thank you for the NFC Championship. And thank you for the Superbowl. You will always be one of the heros of 2009. But it's time to part ways.

Now all that said, Hartley, or whomever our next kicker is, needs to stop being put in that position time after time after time. Nobody can be successful like that.

Given our defense, a good FG by Hartley in all likelyhood would have only delayed the inevitable. Does anyone really think we would have stopped GB from marching down the field for a winning FG?

No but that's not the point

He shouldn't take the total blame for the loss - but he should be cut, nonetheless, to send a message...

Right after him, I'd let Sedrick Ellis, Will Smith, and Roman Harper catch a ride with him...

And Lance Moore, you're a possession receiver that's dropping the ball - What would Coach Payton say to you now, son...

LOL, I was saying we should cut hartley before the plane ride home, leave his butt in GB.
Also, I agree w/ Ellis and Smith, but still have hope for Harper. Oh, and about Lance Moore...since when does he drop passes? It seems like this year he's dropping more than all the other years combined!? Not like him at all!!

Even if Hartley would have made the field goal, I'm pretty sure our D would have let A-Rod carve em up and they probably would of scored on us anyway.

to blame this loss on one player is insane. We need all new DB's, DT's, OL and a few wr's. This team is in dire need of SP or rebuilding

I've been a Shankley detractor since Atlanta a couple years back. Inexcusable. I even predicted it in a thread before the season, that he would cost us a game with a missed kick.

Thomas screwed HIM, then HE screwed US. 7 yards. Heck, one of his XP's was left. I commented on LiVE, "Shades of Shank". And it happened.

When the pressure is on, he shanks LEFT.

And he was no hero in Minn. or the Super Bowl. Porter was.

Give me Kasay any day.

PEOPLE. WAKE UP!
WHAT HAS HARLEY DONE FOR THE SAINTS LATELY?

2 years has been TOOOOOO long. I've made up my mind about Hartley after thinking about it tonight.

They need to cut Hartley and bring back Kasey. If anything just shake it up. Sean Payton did it and that's why we had Kasey to start with.

Everyone else on this thread blaming defense, Thomas, whether Hartley made it the D couldn't stop 'em, he was on our Superbowl team....
YOU'RE TOTALLY MISSING THE POINT!

This thread really isn't about "I BLAME HARTLEY FOR THE LOSS," it's about Harley throwing MULTIPLE GAMES and cutting ties with him NOW before he has a chance to screw up any games THIS SEASON!

Dependable kickers are out there. Most of 32 teams have one. We have enough problems right now without KICKER DRAMA DELIMMA.

As for Hartley and his Superbowl with us!! COME ON, he got a ring. As fans we gave him our hearts, but PLEASE, this is a business. You'll see Hartley at the Superbowl reunion game in 8 years!

I'm serious, this is business, not sappy sympathy that makes you pick your stupid cousin in a pickup game because he's "kin". COME ON PEOPLE, WAKE UP!!!!

WHAT HAS HARTLEY DONE FOR YOU LATELY???
That's the measure of a kicker in the NFL. I'm sorry, end of story, get your feelings hurt that's your fault. NFL teams DO NOT require the same kicker on staff year after year, they just need one who can boot it through the uprights!!!!

I too think he's gonna "miss it" when he even goes up for extra-points.
NEXT KICKER PLEASE!!!!!

Are we cutting Sproles too for droping the 3rd and 4 pass from Brees that would have kept the drive alive instead of forcing the long FG?
Come on guys, 48 yard FG isn't a gimme and there is more than enough blame to go around for the loss. I guess the Giants are cutting their kicker for missing last night and Pats kicker for missing 2 of them yesterday. How about we catch the dam ball and only let the kicker kick extra points.

No sir... Watch the hold again. Thomas was double teamed and the guy he held still almost blocked the FG...

If Thomas does not hold, its blocked, and possibly run for 6.

Yeah but the reason Thomas had to hold was because he didn't slide his feet for protection. He kept his feet in place like he was in a hole. If he slides to his left he picks up the rush and the kick is good. Bad fundamentals.

No. Watch the play again... He was double teamed. He had one guy in this left hand and one guy in his right hand.. If he slides either way the other guy is in Hartley's face.

His choice was to pick one and let the other run free or try and hold both.

Time for the coaches to man up and kick some azz!

I agree Buds, and I think most people here will too. I don't blame Hartley for the loss. There is plenty of blame to go around for that. What I do blame Hartley for is missing the field goal...again. That's his job. Like I posted earlier, I have been one of the biggest Hartley defenders and supporters for a long time on this board, but I can't defend him any more. He's too big of a liability. IMO

Hartley needs to go, they are not putting Sproles in a position to make plays like last year, don't have Payton calling the plays.

Again, this isn't about just the game yesterday. You know well kicker is a totally different position than runningback. Kickers are journeymen in the NFL, that's their profession. There are always 2 or 3 kickers every season sitting on standby waiting for a call for their 2nd, 3rd, 10th, 12th chance at success again.

When Hartley started missing last season, Payton and Loomis pulled in Kasey fast. Kicker is not a position teams draft and pay big payouts for a guy to just sit on staff.

I disagree that 48 isn't a gimme in the NFL. Kicks below 50 are expected. It's the pros.

He already missed this season from within 39-30 range and another 40+ yarder. Why do people keep apologizing for this guy?

Tampa Bay kicks a FG to win, Atlanta kicks a FG to win, Saints ? Knew he would miss the second try, he is a head case. Too bad after how great he was in the superbowl run.

Well technically the Skins came back and kicked the game winner against TB, but your point remains. Tampa's kicker nailed it (a 47 yarder)

Re: I am ready to move on from Hartley

Even if he makes it there is still 2 minutes or a little more on the clock, I believe Rogers marches them right down the field for a TD. The defense gave him all day with resemblance of a rush what so ever.
IMO the mistake was made much. Earlier in the game kicking a FG from the 3 or something like that instead of going for it, to that point GB hadn't even punted.LOOK HARD AT THE COACHING DECISIONS IN THAT GAME

Kickers win the game... They do not lose it, it is a position of opportunity, except for extra points.

If a game comes down to 3 or less points the loss is on the defense and or offense.

We just do not have a game winning kicker.

I'd have more confidence in Morestead kicking. Or hell, cut Hartley for an extra roster spot and go for two from here on out (kidding, sort of).

I am on board... NO kidding.

Cut Hartley and bring in a god like D-tackle that can both pressure the QB and "William fridge Perry" 2 points into the endzone.

Re: I am ready to move on from Hartley

If you are an insane mad scientist of football like Sean Payton is, sometimes you are a genius and sometimes your crazy laboratory experiments don't work out so well .... That's how I feel about Hartley right about now. I love the CONCEPT of Garrett Hartley on paper -- having a heavily-medicated emo headcase kicker with ADD on the team, who looks like a girl when he trots out there, and every kick is a wobbly mess but they somehow go through the uprights on a wing and a prayer and we win games flying by the seat of our pants -- if the CONCEPT would have worked, Hartley would have been awesome, one of those classic Sean Payton "things" only he comes up with, and we'd all be talking about how Sean Payton's a genius for finding him...we've had great success with plenty of Payton's other nutty professor "experiments" from out of left field, like Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston, Jedediah Collins, "Ambush," and Drew Brees' shoulder, but this kid we have kicking for us with the new wave hairdo ...I don't know if the concept is working out.

First, he was injured last year. He didn't sit for Kasay. I'm not apologizing for Hartley, I'm just saying there were other people to blame for yesterdays lost. If we want to go that route and say his job is to kick FGs and when he miss we cut him, then what's the difference when Sproles drops what was a sure 1st down catch possibly TD because he had beaten his man in coverage or Moore dropping at least 3 passes. When you think of great kickers in the past 10 years doesn't Adam Vinateri and David Akers names come to mind? Well Vinateri has missed 2 FG's in the 30-39 yard range and Akers has missed 2 in the 40-49 range this year so I don't know about that kicks below 50 are expected. But if it makes you happy to cut him, let's cut him I'm sure the Dolphins would pick him up.

Re: I am ready to move on from Hartley

The difference is Sproles hasn't been missing clutch passes for his entire tenure here. Seriously, how can you even try and compare the two?

Re: I am ready to move on from Hartley

Ok, be pissed about the miss, but do you really think our D would have held GB out of FG range? I don't. Of course, anything is possible and at least they would have had the opportunity to try, but I think the outcome was inevitable.

btw, I was pretty impressed with the team yesterday. Not that they played great, but GB isn't a slouch team like KC and we went toe to toe with them and nearly took the win.

Everyone make mistake. You win as a team and you lose as a team. You should never have to depend on your kicker. Get the DAM JOB DONE>
