New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo: "Saints keep losing game of inches"
 

In his Monday press conference, New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo focused extensively on one drive that occurred in the Saints' 28-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The Packers had the ball on their own 8-yard line to begin the drive and ended it with a touchdown. They did it courtesy of two Saints penalties and a successful fake punt on fourth-and-inches.

Complete mishaps on defense is not inches. More like 20 yds on 3rd down and long or 8 yards on 1st down.

Yeah all those ones against the Chiefs still irk me -- 4th and 5 ,they go for it and get it...then had them at 3rd and 13, and they get it....3rd and 5, delay of game penalty makes it 3rd and 1, then they get it...3rd and 12 they give up 11...then on 4th and 1, they go for it and get it...then against the Pack, on the fake punt they need one yard and get 5....hate to tell you Spags but that's not a game of inches. If they go for it on 4th down and then the refs need to call for the chains and measure to see if they actually got it, THAT'S when you are playing a game of inches my friend.

There are 3600 inches on a football field, and our defense basically gives up every single one of them to the other team's offense, at will.

Teams knew early on to go for it on 4th down. Don't even bother hoping to get another chance with the way our offense performed last season. It's a good formula to beat the Saints.
