New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees may have some familiar faces in the crowd Sunday night as he takes aim at NFL history.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell granted Brees' request for permission for suspended Saints head coach Sean Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis and assistant coach Joe Vitt to attend Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers. Payton, Loomis and Vitt's seating arrangements are being worked out with the Saints.


Brees enters the game against the Chargers trying to set a new NFL record with a touchdown pass in his 48th straight game. Payton and Loomis signed Brees, who was coming off shoulder surgery, when almost no other teams would before the 2006 season.

Payton was suspended for the season as a result of the Saints' bounty scandal, while Loomis was banned for the first eight games. Vitt received a six-game suspension.

There is precedent with Brees pursuing the idea of having them attend. The league granted Payton permission to attend Willie Roaf's Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and last weekend allowed Gregg Williams to see his son coach for the Rams in their game against the Seahawks. Williams' son serves as the Rams' linebackers coach.

In another post, someone asked if they had to register on the NFL offender website. LMAO! Probably will be chained and shackled and escorted to the restroom. They better not make any sudden gestures with their hands or wink at anyone or they will be accused of "communicating" with the team. Ridiculous if it wasn't so sad.

This is good news, better news would be "Sean Payton back on the Saint's sideline!". But we will not see that headline this year I guess. Would be great if we could note down the first win for this season. It is really messed up, such a bad start!

Guys, go win on Sunday! And Drew Brees go for another record!!! Hope I can make it and get up to see the game. In Germany it is 2 am by that time....

Friends in NOLA say the talk is that Payton could be back after game 8 due to the 0-4 start.

Paytons phone will be confiscated at the door so he cant txt in the plays and adjustments to Kromer.

He cant do that from home because there is a delay on televised games.

I saw the NFL Network report this morning (6:30 Am about), and it was said that Brees requested to goodell ( I spell his name with a lower case leter on purpose) that Sean P. is there Sun night.
Why show up? Brees breakinbg this record is easy to do. Sean P. can see same from tv at his house. Being there is like eating shet, groveling to goodell.
Also, for the best of the Saints ...if Sean P. is there and the Saints just happen to win this game, then others-media, fans, teams will say Sean P. coached the team.
Once again, the bounty thing on the Saints part was jsut plain stupid. It was a nasty way of saying what their contracts say which is X dollars in incentives of sacks, tackles, runs, etc. Same thing.
Yeah, other teams are still doing this. See post about Reggie Bush having the NY Jets say they were going after him.
However, the punishment here does not fit. You have conVicked felons in the NFL. Fine and dandy that seems.

The request was a ploy by Brees actually hoping the NFL would say no which would have given the players and coaches more stroke considering last week they allowed Gregg Williams to go to the lambs game. But they do deserve to be at the game since they are the reasons Drew has this opportunity to set the record.

I see what you are saying since they hired Brees, coached him these years...but it really makes no sense to show up. No self-respect there.
They , Vitt and Sean P, together or separate will be in a suite or media booth to view game. I do not know if they can or cannot sit together.
THEY can not have no contact per NFL network report and according to the punishment , nothing to do with any players, staff, coaches, staff at Saints office, groundskeepers at Saints day facility, nothing, beer /peanuts staff, LOL, no one. View game in booth. Have cameras on them. Be a distraction. Leave.

Yeah that's kinda what I'm thinking as well. It almost sounds to me like Brees read about Gregg Williams going to the Rams game in the paper, and then decided to make Goodell jump through some hoops for him. I don't think any of this happens if it weren't for what the league did with letting Gregg Williams back and planting it in the media the way they did, then Vilma's response to it on Twitter, the Tweets after the Packers/Seahawks debacle, etc.

Why do some people NOT want SP, Loomis, and Vitt to go? OK so Goodell's a D*** but it doesn't mean that they should turn down the invitation to go and see Brees break the record. Brees asked for them to be there...so I think because he showed that respect to want them there for this massive achievement they should respect him and go watch him break the record.

I know Goodell is a tyrant but not everything has to be a fight. just show up and enjoy watch your guy that you've help for the last 6 yrs get to this point in his career break a record that is way more significant that Marino's

It would be respectful to Brees to show. He made the request. It is his record. (against his former team) The record is a big deal - in an otherwise abysmal #1 Draft Pick season.

I would hope they do show up and all get put in a suite together, with a NFL "monitor" to make sure they don't speak to each other.

The networks should put them on the screen, it goes back to showing how overboard the punishments are.

I have a feeling any reissued punishments will come out either Friday or Monday to limit any negative media impact on the league.

Der Kommisar would rather have the media reporting on the games rather than how incompetitent he is.

Payton put Brees in the position to succeed. He is the one who coached and developed him. He is the only one that should attend. Loomis can spend more thime with his basketball thing and Vitt can get ready to rip some arses when he comes back.

If all three go to the game, they will likely all sit together ... which means they will share notes :wink: somehow. This is a brilliant move by Brees to get SP's input with Goodell's blessing somehow. Drew should be a politician when he retires. :bng:

There has not been any release of "rules of attendance", but I have a feeling there may be a few. The first is probably is if these rules are leaked "approval to attend the game will be revoked".

Glad they went. Glad RG let them. This record for Brees and being part of the Saints was more of a record than breaking Marino's.
