Drew Brees' record-breaking TD pass was a play Chase Daniel knew would work
New Orleans Saints quarterbacks Drew Brees and Chase Daniel knew they had a shot play in the extensive playbook that could easily result in a Saints touchdown if Brees saw the right look from the San Diego Chargers defense.
Daniel said Monday afternoon when he and Brees first watched film of San Diego leading up to Sunday's 31-24 win over the Chargers that Devery Henderson could take advantage of one-on-one coverage on the outside in a manageable third-down situation. "When we turned on the film, that was one of the first plays me and Drew were like, 'We HAVE to call this play,'" Daniel said. "Did we know it was going to be the play that set the record? No. But we knew if we got the right look and called it at the right time, we felt like it would be a touchdown." Johnny Unitas
To congratulate Brees on tying the record, Johnny Unitas’ son, Joe Unitas sent Brees this letter: October 2, 2012 Drew Brees New Orleans Saints 5800 Airline Dr. Metairie, LA 70003 Drew, I wanted to take a minute to congratulate you on tying my father’s record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass. I’ve been follow your pursuit of the record since last season. I’m a big fan of yours, and wish you the best Sunday night against San Diego as you try to break the record. My father always said that records were meant to be broken. I know that if he was still with us that he would wish you the best as well. When I look back on my father’s life I remember a man who was much bigger than the game of football. The things he would appreciate most about you have nothing to do with football; it’s about who you are as a person. You’re a role model for today’s youth, a family man, and a humanitarian who cares for his community. My father would tell you these are the important things in life, not some record in a book. Continue to be a leader for your team and the City of New Orleans. You’re a great quarterback but even better man. Stay healthy and safe this week and in the future. My family and I will be watching Sunday night cheering for you. Best of luck. Sincerely, Joe Unitas Unitas We Stand |

Man, I really like Chase. I hope we trade him and get some good value and he gets to go start somewhere.
I wish we could keep him but he's a piece that isn't needed and we could use some good personnel we could make a hard strong run for the Super Bowl next year. Though I'm not sure how well our QB3 could perform lol |

It's a good idea to keep a solid backup that knows the offense on your roster. |

Theres a reason chase has never been cut; He comes out slinging every preseason The coaching staff see him as a good backup QB The only person that knows the offense better than him is the guy above him in the depth chart He has a good football mind, he and drew are always studying film and pictures together In training camp they constantly push eachother because chase and drew get really competitive and make eachother play better Like halo said, who else would you want as a backup other than the guy who knows the offense like the back of his hand |

Do you think it will ever be Chase Daniel's team?

Thanks Chase.. I called that a week ago. Stop reading my posts and claiming brilliance.

Chase is the perfect BU for the Saints. I am no where convinced he is a starting QB for us or anywhere else... Neither is the league or he would have been snatched from us already.

For now, it's a mistake to not have someone on the roster who is familiar with our offense and talented enough to backup that familiarity. |

First, will Chase be able to be patient enough to wait and be content with being a back-up, which, IMO, he is perfect for this team? Will some other team see his ability as being starter-worthy and roll the dice on him? Secondly, is Chase really starting QB material in this league...or better yet...perceived as starting material by this organization? Is it possible that this is the perfect role for him, as it appears to be for someone like David Carr...and if it came down to it and Drew was gone, would they go out and draft or acquire what they consider to be a #1 rated signal caller? |
Re: Drew Brees' record-breaking TD pass was a play Chase Daniel knew would work
I'd love it for Chase if he were to get in a Matt Flynn type situation, i.e., he comes in at the end of the season to rest Drew (since we'll have already locked up the playoff spot by then *fingers crossed*) and he has one of those ridiculous games where he just flat out goes off, and then gets an equally ridiculous offer based on his play in that one game. I mean really, the guys got a SB ring, he's been backing up one of the all time greats, he deserves a shot somewhere to show what he can do.

We would have to Lock up the NFC South and HAVE to beat Atlanta twice, or some teams will have to go downhill really quick for us to lock anything up. |

Chase understands his role, and he is perfect for this team as he is presently being utilized. If this organization thought Chase was starting material, we wouldn't keep bringing in 2-3 QB's for preseason.
They bring in and try out new QB's because they are looking for the next Drew Brees, not another Chase Daniels. Chase has a SB ring because he was part of the team, much like Shanle. "Backing up" essentially means he watched Drew. He has had chances to "light it up" in preseason and doesn't. He has been in two regular season games and has yet to WOW anyone enough to come after him. I am in no way saying he is bad at all, I am just saying he has yet to make the most of his opportunities. Think about this when you think starting QB for the Saints. With the rest of our season being a must win fest... What are our chances with Drew? What are our chances if Chase is starting? Chase also likes to bolt under pressure. Not a good thing, look at Vick's injuries, RGIII concussion this week.. We need a passer. The Brady and Rogers argument could be used but how many of those arguments are out there? |
Re: Drew Brees' record-breaking TD pass was a play Chase Daniel knew would work
No one knows how good Chase is because we don't show our hand on anything. Chase never gets the chance to sling the ball. His job is to hand the ball off.

I freak out screaming when he does it of course, but I kinda DIG that Chase has that spooked-horse, headless chicken running move, like Alex Smith does. If (GOD FORBID) Chase ever comes in and has to (GOD FORBID) win a game, with (GOD FORBID) something important on the line, all bets are off, and NOBODY will be expecting that (GOD FORBID) desperate crazy running up the middle thing that Chase and Alex Smith does. Go back to pass, pump it around, tuck and run with it, aim for that big green patch in the middle, slide boy, slide, get down! He will move some chains with that, against far better players than him, I guarantee it. That's exactly the way Alex Smith does it -- it's kind of a sissy move, an un-manly, ugly, chickensh**, half-assed way to get a cheap first down... it almost feels like cheating, sort of, but it WORKS! And it drives opposing fans absolutely BANANAS when you do it to them a few times, especially on the road in a hostile stadium. Chase is a really good backup for the Saints, in that he's "like" Drew and the plays kinda look somewhat the same, but he's also got his own thing going on with the crazy take-off-running thing. He's the $1 Million Dollar Man, and Drew's the $100 Million Dollar Man. |

SaintsBro:
I buy that... I do recall saying in preseason he needs some time with MLB to learn how to SLIDE. Rugby: Experts watch him daily. I am sure if he had shown then something in practice by now he would have had opportunity. |
