He missed makeable kicks against the Packers and Chiefs that has cost us games this year.

He won for us yesterday.

Then again, if he could have made the 36 yarder it would have never went into OT...

Today on YouTube: Norwegian Havard Rugland earns NFL trial with New York Jets after posting spectacular kicking video.

It's not got the glamour of quarterback, but there is no position Norweigan hopeful Havard Rugland wants to play more in American football than kicker.

By Telegraph Sport 24 Dec 2012 2:43PM GMT

To demonstrate his considerable talents, Rugland made a video compilling his spectacular football-kicking trick shots which show him nailing everything from 60-yard field goals to wildly useless scissor kicks.

It has been enough to earn the 27-year-old a trial with the New York Jets.

"On this trip things have evolved rapidly, from just training alone to training to try out for a team. From where I am now, playing in the NFL is a long way to go, but my goal is to get a contract before the preparations begin for next season," Rugland said.

That one that he missed yesterday, I turned away for a moment to grab something to eat or take a sip of my drink, and when my eyes came back to the screen, the ball was already snapped...they rushed the unit out there to snap it...when you give Hartley a time out or a penalty or give him the full 40 seconds, a long snap count, he usually nails it. Some of this is on the coaches, probably Payton and McMahon, who are always kinda impatient and OCD.

He is an emo kid, head case kicker, nut job, absolutely, with attention deficit disorder, it's been proven....and when you don't give him a lot of time to be still, to settle into it and compose himself, I've become convinced that's when his performance suffers. He has problems to be sure, but his numbers are too good to declare him a complete bum... Just my take on it.

Which numbers are too good? Have you looked at his situational stats? Indoors vs out doors, grass vs turf, home away...

You'll see we have a dome team and a kicker that is better on grass outside. Good kid, bad match for the Saints.
3% better on Grass
10% better Away
11% better Outdoors
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits...arrett-hartley

You have also set a standard that we have to call a time out or cause a
penalty for every FG?

No sir, can't afford to have a kicker that needs special situations to be accurate, or coddle to make a FG.

Bring in the kid from Tulane. He made every kick this year including 50+ kicks, won the Lou Graza award and is very comfortable kicking in the dome.
Cairo Santos.

Kicker can't kill us if we have a 14 point lead.

Wouldn't have to worry about which kicker we had with a 14 point lead.

It's difficult to get 14 points without a kicker......extra points matter.

Hartley screwed us over but the team blowing a 14 point lead with 4 minutes to go is what nearly did us in

Not worried about Hartley. If we draft one it'll still be a learning curve.

More worried about a stuttering Offense,Playcalling and a defense that can't tackle or cover, or rush the QB.

TheOak 12-26-2012 01:21 PM

Mighty12 / SaintsBro

You should both read the context to which my reply was intended. See quote in reply.

Then reality might set in with you.

SaintsBro
In the "real world", if you blow a 14 point lead its your defense or your your offense, not the other teams kicker.

Mighty12
The other teams kicker does not effect out extra points.

No need to lash out at me because you didn't get what you wanted for Christmas. My previous reply still stands. And is valid.

Re: What are we going to do about Hartley?

I was about 75% sure he was going to miss the OT FG against Dallas. Fans should not have that feeling about a kick like that. I wanted to run it 3 times and then kick if we had to.

OldMaid 12-26-2012 05:47 PM

Re: What are we going to do about Hartley?

Easy. He needs some good competition brought in.
If I were him, during off season, I would be out there practicing.

Cairo Santos.

Sounds like the Randy Bullock (Texas A&M) story from last year. 2011 Lou Graza Award winner, drafted in the fifth round by the Houston Texans. Spent the entire season on IR with a groin tear.

Gotta' be careful with these guys with the big legs, you can end up right back where you started from.

Mardigras9 12-27-2012 08:06 AM

Re: What are we going to do about Hartley?

He is a head case. Do you guys really back him is we find ourselves in a position to go to the playoffs/superbowl depending on his foot? Yes, granted our superbowl year was his shining moment and we all thought we had a clutch kicker. But every year since has proven that is not the case. Every time he comes in for any kick (not an extra point, but sometimes them also) I have a 40 point spike in my blood pressure. Reminds me of crawling under my seat when Bush was returning punts. There has got to be a better option out there.
And if he is coming in for another team to possibly beat us, I like our chances. Rather have him on that side.

Papa Voodoo 12-27-2012 09:05 AM

Re: What are we going to do about Hartley?

2 years ago he missed a chip shot against ATL that sent our season on a different path. We likely would have had HFA. This year he missed in Green Bay which was a season killer. If he was missing longer, difficult kicks I would be more forgiving.

The Saints have a helluva lot bigger problems than the kicker!

1. A defense that is hemmoraghing points and yards
1a. We are without our head coach

Yeah I venture to say he cost us the GB and KC game.

That is a difference of being 9-6 right now compared to the 7-8 we currently setting on.

seems like he cost us another game to some point in the season, I dont remember.

Re: What are we going to do about Hartley?

In my opinion (even though he's a bears player) robbie gould shows how to make every kick

on the chip shots he doesnt try to smack it like hartley does, hartley treats a 20 yarder like a 50 yarder and tries to snap the net

Gould "chips" the chip shot FGs and smacks the longer range, thats why he's been reliable for all his career

Maybe he needs a better coach? Our WR coach left last year for the Tulane job and look at all of the dropped passes....

I'm not a Hartly fan by any means but it amazes me how people can soley blame him for the Green Bay and KC loss.
I mean really... the other 52 players and 59:00 minutes had nothing to do right?

For some reason I can't understand half of you

He was put in a very favorable position by the offense after the defense made a stop. He is on the 3rd portion of the team, kicking. All he does is kick. He missed a very makeable kick with no real time left in the game. We lost.

Drew lost the SF and ATL games and those are his fault. The kick off coverage team lost the Giants game. Pick sixes, drive killing interceptions/fumbles, allowing kick off returns for TDs, and missing game winning kicks are hugely devastating.

He is, the guy cant make simple easy kicks.

If he would of made one of the more easier FGs in the KC game earlier on, it would of never went to OT.

in GB he had a chance to to put the saints up 30-28 with little time left and he failed.

The guy is a head case at the position.

Is he the sole reason, no. Like you mentioned, there are things that could have gone better for us to not be in that situation.

However..the dude has ONE job. Thats it. He don't have to worry about anything the other 52 guys have to worry about. 0-40 should be made without even thinking about it. 40-50 a miss here and there is almost stomachable. 50+ you can understand.

I will bet my left nut, SP brings in some kickers next year and I would not be surprised if Hartley is kicking somewhere else.
