NFL gives Saints written permission to negotiate contract extension with Sean Payton
 

"The league office has communicated fully on this matter with the Saints and we are confident that it will be resolved in an appropriate and timely fashion," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

The development was earlier reported by Fox Sports.

The contract extension agreed upon by Payton and the Saints was rejected by the league because it contained a clause allowing Payton to leave if general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended or departed the organization.

Loomis, who returned from his eight-game suspension as a result of the NFL's bounty investigation last week, told the New Orleans Times-Picayune last week that he thinks a deal with Payton will get done.

"I absolutely expect Sean to be our coach next year and going forward. These contract issues will be resolved," Loomis told the newspaper.

Coach Payton being suspended should mean he has plenty of time to sit down with Loomis and get a deal done.

I don't even think it will be a long process. Benson should just give Payton a blank check and a lifetime script of Vicodin. That should seal the deal pretty quick. :p

Like the Brees deal everyone was in a panic over, it will get done.

I could be wrong but I think they already had a deal done. The NFL nixed it because they didn't like the clause that Payton could leave if Loomis were suspended or left the organization. If Payton can live without that clause, which the NFL won't allow anyway, then they should already have a deal.

True... but like they actually have a no choice.... just imagine the publicity and the lawsuit if they bulldozed SP's future with the Saints!

For some reason this deal doesn't bother me as much as the Brees deal...
