Alex Smith still not cleared for game action
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh’s comments about going with the hot hand at quarterback raised speculation about a quarterback controversy in San Francisco, but there’s no reason to make a choice between Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick just yet.
Harbaugh said Wednesday that Smith still hasn’t been cleared for contact following the concussion he suffered against the Rams in Week 10. Smith never took the team’s “contact” test late last week after suffering symptoms of the concussion and needs to do that before he can make a full return. “It looks like he will be (cleared) before the week is out,” Harbaugh said during an interview on the Murph & Mac show on KNBR, via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. “But not as of now. I’m sure he will be.” Harbaugh didn’t say who would be starting this week, but he did say that the 49ers have the “opposite of a controversy” at the position because they have two good quarterbacks. We’re not exactly sure what the opposite of a controversy would mean, but we’re pretty sure people will keep referring to it as one until Harbaugh makes his call. I think he's trying to make it a mystery for us to game plan.

Saw this coming mid way through the 1st quarter of the SF/Bears game...

I vote for Smith.

Re: Alex Smith still not cleared for game action
I vote for the rookie. Defenses love fresh meat. Then again, our defense would love to pay back that lucky a** QB Smith.

Quote:
He's more accurate than Smith. We have a way of making rookie QB's look like Joe Montana. Would hate to create a QB controversy starting from the Dome! |
Re: Alex Smith still not cleared for game action
I'm not sure how much it really matters or makes a difference honestly...does it really? Their whole offensive scheme in San Francisco is based on building an offense around Gore and Vernon Davis that compensates for mediocre QB play, and is designed for the offense being "just good enough" to not lose games that the defense wins for them. It's not like their offense terrifies anybody. Look at all the low-scoring games they've won, especially at home.... Not exactly offensive fireworks in my book.Without that defense of theirs, their team would be flat out mediocre, perhaps even poor, like the years when they were 4-12 and all that.

Re: Alex Smith still not cleared for game action
Im positive Colin Kaepernick is playing. If smith was playing they would have cleared for contact sooner. You don't clear Smith for contact on thanksgiving day, thursday, if you going to play him on an away game Sunday.
Harbaugh is not fooling anyone. |
