Jermon Bushrod, Sedrick Ellis headline group of New Orleans Saints free agents

With the team's season wrapping up after Sunday's home finale against the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints players with expiring contracts began discussing their futures Wednesday, just one more harsh truth for a team that's been playing football in January for the past three seasons.

Left tackle Jermon Bushrod likely will be the team's top unrestricted free agent priority as he's been more than capable of protecting Brees' blind spot as he earned a Pro Bowl bid in 2011. Bushrod signed a two-year deal in 2010 maxing out around $9 million total.

Bushrod didn't say he deserved a top-tier left tackle contract simply adding that he'll take whatever teams feel like he deserves. Bushrod, 28, also said he understands he's in the prime of his career.

Defensive end Sedrick Ellis, 27, is the most noteworthy unrestricted free agent on defense. The 2008 first-round pick by the Saints has 34 total tackles this season and has compiled ½ sack the last two seasons.

Ultimately, Ellis said both parties will come to a decision for what's best for each other.

Yeah we probably have a couple of guys here on this board that could get more than ½ a sack in 2 years just on pure will and effort.

I had to look it up to see if you were just joking around...

You weren't.

I know DT's shouldn't be graded on sacks, but thats just awful.

I'm beginning to think that other DT's we've had over the last few years have been bad because they played right next to Ellis. His suck wore off on them, too.

The last two seasons have been horrible for Ellis. One of which was in gregg williams defense and one in Spag's. So it doesn't look like the scheme.

Profootballfocus has him ranked 61st out of 83 DTs rated. Notably, that's behind Hicks, Bunkley, and T. Johnson. Stangely though, He got far more snaps than the others listed. Ellis was in on 663 defensive plays, Hicks only 383 plays, Bunkely 324, and Tom Johnson 387.

It doesn't look like Ellis is earning his pay or his starting spot.

Well, no surprise at all we wont see him in the Black and Gold next year. Him and Dorsey overrated.
