Anything less than undefeated and winning every game 99-0 is going to be a disappointment to these people, once Benson starts paying Payton $8 million a year instead of the cheapest salary available. Just watch, the first loss or first hiccup next season, the same "armchair GM" people will be jumping up and down and saying "I told you so! We never should have paid so much to Payton! I wanted to hire Gruden!" or whatever silly thing it is they're going to say. If those fans treat Payton 1/10th the shabby way they've treated Drew, they will be calling for Payton's head after one loss in October, just watch....

I don't agree with this. It takes a lot of bad to make people that angry. I, myself, have been hard on Drew at times this year, but not after one or two losses. After we lost to San Francisco and Atlanta in consecutive weeks, in large part due to his pathetic play in those games, I became very tired of his careless decisions. I wouldn't have been any less frustrated if he were making 1 dollar. But I did say before the season that 100 million is too much for any player in the NFL. It's not like baseball where you have no salary cap. And given Drew's age, there is far from a guarantee that he'll even be good by the end of the contract. If he stays healthy, he should be, but it's a risk. So throwing 19 interceptions, having numerous fumbles and his lowest completion percentage since 2003 isn't going to breed a very positive feeling about the amount of money he's making. To me, that's fair. If you're making that kind of money you better be ready to back it up, or face a lot of criticism. But as a fan, I just want to see him play well, period, and for a large portion of this season he was making awful decisions.
I don't see Sean Payton getting any backlash unless he really screws up horribly. I doubt he will. Plus, what arsaint said is important aswell. Payton not counting against the salary cap takes a lot of fan pressure off of him.
