Bountygate: The NFL owes New Orleans an apology

Much has been written about the alleged “Pay for Injury” program of the New Orleans Saints. There is no proof that this alleged program ever existed.

In fact, the tragedy is that there has been no hard evidence whatsoever to justify Commissioner Roger S. Goodell’s decision to suspend the Saints’ General manager, coaches and current & former players, as well as forfeiting their top draft pick prior to the 2012 season. Now that most of the real facts have emerged, it is evident that the Commissioner jumped the shark in his zeal and rush to judgment against the New Orleans Saints.

Since Goodell has yet to admit wrongdoing, I decided to take the liberty of writing a letter he can use as a template if he ever decides to make things right. He should feel free to copy this as closely as he likes.

It is evident that the Saints had a “Pay for Performance” program. This is a far cry from a “Pay to Injure” program. In fact, all evidence points to criteria that your team would pay no incentives to players who injured an opposing player. Your program, evidently, was one that caused your players to tackle correctly and enhance the quality of play on defense. In examination of stats from the years your Play for Performance program was in place, the Saints had the second lowest incidence of injuries to opposing players; of the 32 NFL teams, only one other team caused fewer injuries to its opponents than the Saints. That is not only remarkable; it is commendable.

I agree, it cleary makes the distinction between 'pay for performance' and 'pay to injure' that most of the NFL fan base doesn't seem to be able to grasp. I especially like the last part of the quote that points out only one team in the NFL caused less injuries than the Saints program and that was not only commendable, but remarkable ... something B&G readers knew from Day One.
