Former Giants player attacks Drew Brees for Saints QB's comments about retired players

I agree 100% with what Brees said!

*********************************************************

Another retired NFL player took New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees to task. Former New York Giants wide receiver Phil McConkey blasted Brees on WFAN radio in New York Tuesday concerning comments Brees made a few years ago about retired players mismanaging their finances.

"There are some guys today that have absolutely no clue and that run their mouths," McConkey said. "And Drew Brees is one of them. ... I know he's canonized and people think he's great. If he got in front of a group of ex-players, I don't know what would happen. ... It's just -- it's disgusting, but that's some of the mentality that's around."

Brees, who is on the NFLPA's executive committee, said in 2011 that it wasn't the job of the players' union to compensate retired players for making poor choices with their finances once their careers ended.

"There's some guys out there that have made bad business decisions," Brees said a few years ago. "They took their pensions early because they never went out and got a job. They've had a couple divorces and they're making payments to this place and that place. And that's why they don't have money. And they're coming to us to basically saying, 'Please make up for my bad judgment.' In that case, that's not our fault as players."

In his six NFL seasons, McConkey was used as a reserve receiver, and frequently returned punts and kickoffs on special teams. Statistically, his best season was in 1985, when he caught 25 passes for 404 yards, returned 53 punts for 442 yards, and gained 234 yards returning kickoffs.
Not Important

Who gives these clowns air time? Honestly, Drew calls a spade a spade and some nobody kick returned from the 80's who probably blew everything he's ever made tries to call Brees out? Gtfo.

Brees is 100% correct...
It's called responsibility!
I realize they didn't make as much as player do today but they still all made more than I'll ever make! I don't feel sorry for older players who blew thier money.

Hey McConkey, that's why they say "the truth hurts".
Deal with it.

Nice to see that there is absolutely nothing interesting going on in the sports world, therefore we get to hear from a nobody who will forever remain a nobody. More interestingly to note that while football is still going on, the world remains disinterested in the teams that remain..... Suck on that Dirty Birds...

Provided he doesn't let everyone else around him corrupt his judgement, I think Drew would make an excellent politician someday. He's right on point.

When some former player who no one has ever heard of calls out a future hall of famer, but doesn't bother to confirm or deny what that person has said about players blowing their money, well... You get the idea.

In the old days i can not agree with drew. Back when you put your degree on the shelf and played the game for less money than the degree would have paid i say the nfl owes them. they built the nfl.

Now when the salaries exploded in the 80's and 90's i have start leaning to supporting drew. If a player is making serious money and plays football he should have learned to insure himself in college. But during this time frame i have to remember the league min was well a true min. less than 100k so those players should be helped. those numbers are few because they did not last long

In todays game i say tough nuggies. the nfl is wrecking the game with rule changes that are solid to us as a safety concern were under their breath they snicker and say it bring in more money.

its not a cut and dry issue.

I don't think those of the old days have an excuse either. I don't believe they made less playing football than they would have with a normal job. But that's neither here nor there. My main problem is who says these guys HAD to pass up a degree? If you're going to college to play football, what's stopping you from getting a degree? What's stopping them from working a regular job that doesn't even require a degree? As much as I love to rag on the NFL big wigs, this issue is not their responsibility. The economy and the job market itself was far better back then than it is now. My old job isn't going to pay my bills when I'm old, so these retired players need to stop whining.

Re: Former Giants player attacks Drew Brees for Saints QB's comments about retired players

The thing is people made the decision to play football then for the compensation provided. It was a choice. I fully agree that these guys built the game we love and many are forever remembered for it. I completely agree with union funds looking after football related health issues for these former players. But beyond that I 100% agree with what Drew said. Of course it won't be popular with former players.

I can't imagine the stupidity I could generate to go to a former employer of mine and whine for money because the guys he pays now decades later make much more than I made at the time. Perhaps my early efforts helped grow his company from a small mom & pop to a billion dollar industry, but he owes me nothing. I was compensated for my efforts in a mutual agreement and that's it. When I took a buy out or pension that was the end. I think it's pathetic that someone would come back crying for more money because the economy is different now or inflation has blown modern salaries out of proportion. The gall someone would have to expect that.

As I said, health benefits I am in agreement with if related to the work they did. Other than that, each individual is and always will be responsible for their own financial position and should depend on no charity to be a security blanket.

before the big jump in salaries it was not uncommon to see players making 30k for the season and working a second job in the summer.

I remember stories of players with degrees playing for less money than the degree would bring.

Back in the day many of the players played because they loved the game. Money was not the #1 driving force it is today.

Thus the down fall in the quality of the game.
Money making is TV ratings.
TV ratings are points on the scoreboard
Changes in Defense rules protect the TV ratings
Protect the TV ratings keeps the money rolling in

Question is who is protecting the quality of the game?

In my book NO ONE.

Anyways none of this would have happened without them. are some trying to cash in? yes. There are other that should be heard

I can see your point to an extent. But I tend to believe that if you skip a degree, it's a personal choice, and if you do have a degree, use it when you're career is over. If these guys made choices that didn't allow them to make enough money, then that is their responsibility. They loved the game, and that is great. But no one forced them to do anything they didn't want to do. That's my viewpoint on it.

Lumm0x's comment above pretty much states how I see it aswell.

The old players of the 1970's and back did make the NFL. Laid the foundation for it is today. The big week long SB , a major tax/income revunue for a host city, the players huge salaries and even for those who earn a few hundred thousand, and more are because of these 1970's and back players.

I agree they built the NFL and built the teams on which they played.

I agree the big money like today was not there even for the best players and I mean those who broke records.
Saints' Dempsey is a good example.
The list is a long one of all those good , old players.

NFL and their union has to provide for these players in these player's pensions for what they earned. What they earned , they earned, and what they did not earn, they din't. Pretty simple. What they earned and if they still have their money in the NFL, it is theirs. Simple. Yeah, some took theirs and so oh well, they don't have this money .
Simple again.

For those players who took their money, sqaundered their money, did not get real jobs after the NFL days, oh well.
Their jobs are really the same as yours and mine .
If you are a school teacher , RN, etc. today, you earn far more than those of the 1970's, 1960s.
Those pensions of those people are what they have and are good for them to live on.
Even now, many of these NFL players who made big money, huge , millions during the 1980 and up now, are broke. Ask Terrel Owens. Bernie Kosar -broke.
Living with no budget, wrong life choices =broke.

Brees ' statement was on point.

Now, I do think NFL and the Player's union should be able to do something in medical care for those who had tramatic brain injury due to the sport . That is fact of what happened and the NFL is and has made new rules, better equipment to prevent as best possible this injury for players today .

If my daughter makes a decision to jump from couch to couch and falls and gets hurt, she's made a choice to do something with a risk and got injured because of it. She knew that she might get hurt while pretending to be a trapeze artist. I always tell her that decisions have consequences. She knows this at six years of age.

At six years old, she also knows that it would be asinine to ask me for money because she stopped using diapers three years ago.
