With Spagnuolo gone, will the Saints let go of LB Chris Chamberlain as well?
The surprise release of Steve Spagnuolo brings up the question on if some of the product that he brought with him from his time with the St. Louis Rams will go with him as well, namely linebacker Chris Chamberlain.
Chamberlain was one of the “Spags Connection” hires that came not long after the one year defensive coordinator landed in New Orleans. He was expected to help with the outside linebacker position and play the weakside as well as get the Saints defense acclimated to Spagnuolo’s complex scheme. Of course fans only got to see Chamberlain briefly in preseason after he tore his ACL in the Saints third preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and was lost for the season. He registered only one tackle in preseason which was against the New England Patriots the week before. He has been rehabbing his injured knee during the regular season and was hoping to make a return to the roster but with his old head coach out in New Orleans, Chamberlain could follow him. Evaluations are currently being done on players as well as staff so the Saints could make a decision at anytime. Of course it’ll be hard to do an evaluation on Chamberlain since there virtually is nothing to evaluate except the preseason film. Prior to joining the Saints, Chamberlain had the best season of his career with 64 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and one interception. So he may be given a chance at least in camp to see if he’s fully healed and ready to go. The Saints won’t save much in cap space since Chamberlain is due with bonuses, $1.45 million in 2013 and $1.5 million in 2014. The main question will be to see if Chamberlain can fit the unyet named defensive coordinator’s 3-4 scheme. With Spagnuolo gone, will the Saints let go of LB Chris Chamberlain as well? |

I've been wondering the same thing....if he's signed to a multi yr deal would they look at using him as a trade chip or just cut him flat out, assuming he or the staff wants to cut ties?

Trade him and his contract to the Eagles where spags will end up.

I hope the Saints let him get healthy before deciding to release him.

At his price why not see what he brings to the table first.

What will we get for him 5/6th rounder?

No, they definitely shouldn't get rid of him just because Spags is gone.
I think he can fit the 3-4 scheme much better than some of the LBs on the Saints roster, and therefore it would be foolish to even think that he should be cut of traded simply because he has that "Spags connection." I think Chamberlain could easily play at the other ILB position as well as probably the SOLB position or at least provide depth at those positions behind the starters. We should also keep in mind that he was originally drafted by the Rams as a SS, so he has probably better coverage skills than any of the other LBs the Saints have at the moment. So, I would keep him around and see how the injury has affected him, because if he is back to the level he was last preseason before he got hurt - the Saints simply can't afford to get rid of him! |

Keep him around and let him fight for the right to start in the new D
Competition for a starting spot only makes our team better, the better man will win the spot and make our D stronger |
Spags replacement would be the man to ask and I'm not sure he would appreciate everyone else doing his job before he gets a chance to do it.

The real question thou is when Vilma will be let go. He was pretty darn horrible in New Jersey Jets 3-4 defence.

Can we contact the Eagle and set this up ahead of time? |

Who the hell is Chamberlain and why do we think he'd be an asset? The Lambs didn't think enough of him to keep the guy, so what are we dithering about?
I guess if you're poor, even fecal matter has nutrient value. |

Why cut him before you know if he's any good?

We cut a coach that failed. Justified
We should cut a player that has yet to play a down for the Saints? foolish. His 2011 season with the Rams is close to Vilma production in 2009 for the Saints. Also as good as Hawthorne was any year with the Sea Hawks. So... unless there is a reason he is not a good for for the 3-4 lets see what he can do... |
