Free agents that just got released

New York Giants release linebacker Michael Boley - NFL.com

The veteran linebacker was released Tuesday after four seasons in New York, a move earlier reported by NFL.com's Albert Breer and later confirmed by the team. Boley appeared in every game for the Giants in 2012, starting 11 games and finishing fourth on the team with 84 tackles.

Frostee Rucker released by Cleveland Browns - NFL.com

A top free-agent signing by Cleveland last year, Rucker started all 16 games and finished with 48 tackles and four sacks in his one season with the Browns. Rucker made $6 million last season and $2 million of his $2.5 million contract for 2013 would have been guaranteed if he was still on the roster Wednesday, according to a report by TheSidelineView.com

I thought it might be good to have a separate thread for us to keep track of players getting released that might be interesting in FA.

Re: Free agents that just got released

Can't see Rucker having any real worth to the Saints, since he is about the same size as Smith - while a little lighter though - and, therefore, ideally a 4-3 DE.

Also, the Browns decided to let him go because they were switching away from a 4-3 defense, so it would seem that he won't fit a 3-4 defense.

The New York Giants made a dramatic move on Wednesday, as they have decided to release running back Ahmad Bradshaw after six years with the team.

Pro Football Talk reported the news via Twitter:

In addition, the team has decided to part ways with defensive tackle Chris Canty, according to Albert Breer of NFL Network:

Canty has been a part of the organization for four years, but he only played in nine games this year. His production no longer justified his salary.

However, the big story is the dismissal of Bradshaw, who had been a part of both Super Bowl wins in 2007 and 2011.

The running back was very understanding of the situation. According to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPNNewYork.com, he told ESPN's Josina Anderson:

I saw it coming because of the money [...]. Everything is about money I guess, so yes I was expecting it. I'm not discouraged at all. I'm just looking towards getting healthy and working with somebody else. That is all I can do. The Giants fans will always be remembered and always be loved. This is where I started and I just want to thank everybody for their support. Hopefully I'll be back soon.

Bradshaw has been the leading rusher for the Giants for each of the last three seasons. In 2012, he finished with 1,015 rushing yards and six touchdowns. He also added 245 receiving yards on 23 catches.

Unfortunately, injuries have been a problem for the running back throughout his career. He missed two games this season and has only played a full 16-game schedule once in his six years in the league.

Most recently, he revealed that he underwent surgery on his right foot at the end of January, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

This was his second surgery on the same foot and it seems that New York believed that he was no longer worth the risk.

I've always liked Canty, and if he could be had on the cheap, I wouldn't mind at all adding him to the roster.

He is 6-7 and 317, so he could play as the other DE and tie up O-linemen with his great wingspan or he might even be able play the NT in certain packages.

Canty would be an interesting option in my book especially if he does not get wild offers and is willing to back down a little

Could we get Bradshaw and Ivory to do a job share?

I wouldn't mind taking a run at Canty, if the price is right.

I seriously doubt that we can afford Canty...

Well, it's difficult to know what his asking price is going to be and how much competition there will be over his signing with some of the injury concerns there are about him.

I think it'll be more about the fit and if he still has what it takes to be a real contributor, and if Canty himself fancies wearing the black & gold.

No use waiting on that, because Shanle will either be re-signed or his contract with the Saints will just run out and he becomes an UFA in March.

Yeah one could play while the other is injured.

The new Buffalo Bills coaching staff is in place. The inevitable roster cuts have started to follow.

Veteran linebacker Nick Barnett tweeted on Monday that he was informed of his release. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reported that safety George Wilson was also let go. The Bills made it official soon after.

Barnett's release is not a huge surprise. Even though he remains an effective run-stopper, Barnett was exposed in pass coverage too often. He was set to make $3.5 million. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport said his release was officially listed as a failed physical on the league's transaction wire.

I don't know about Barnett but I think we should take a look at Wilson.

Re: Free agents that just got released

The Bills are already thin at linebacker, making the position a priority in free agency and the draft in the coming months.

Wilson was a respected leader and voted a five-time team captain during his eight seasons in Buffalo. He was also the team's NFL Players Association representative.

Wilson was highly regarded for his work ethic and resilience. He broke in with the Bills as a receiver in 2005 before being converted into a safety while spending the 2006 season on the team's practice squad. He made an immediate impact at his new spot in 2007, when Wilson started nine games and had two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns.

Last season, Wilson finished second on the team with 98 tackles but no interceptions. Most notably, he had two potential fourth-quarter interceptions drop from his hands in losses to Tennessee and St. Louis - both decided in the final minutes.

Wilson was also entering the final year of his contract, and due to make a $2.9 million base salary.

Second-year player Da'Norris Searcy began challenging Wilson for the starting job last season.

The Bills have a big question mark at free safety, with starter Jairus Byrd eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next month.

Veteran defensive lineman Spencer Johnson, defensive end Kyle Moore and linebackers Bryan Scott, Kirk Morrison and Shawne Merriman have also completed the final years of their contracts.

Buffalo's defense is prepared to undergo yet another transformation under Pettine, the unit's third coordinator in three years. Pettine is more accustomed to running a 3-4 alignment after the Bills reverted to a 4-3 system under former coordinator Dave Wannstedt last year.

The Bills struggled in making the transition last year, and despite the free-agent addition of defensive end Mario Williams, who was signed to a six-year, $100 million contract.

Shanle is an UFA, so there's no need to cut him... Herring is the guy that needs to be released. His salary is too high for a back-up (at best) LB.

Something to consider is that, prior to coming to the Saints, Shanle played ILB in a 3-4 defense. I would NOT be at all surprised if we re-signed him to a vet-minimum contract and kept him as a reserve ILB.

Not sure he played much in 3-4. 2005 was the first year Dallas switched to 3-4 and Shanle didn't play much.

I didn't mean to say that he was a starter or key piece in Dallas, he was just a reserve ILB there, but he showed enough for Gary Gibbs and Sean Payton to bring him with from Dallas. All I'm saying is he could be cheap veteran depth.

FinSaint 02-14-2013 12:36 PM

Re: Free agents that just got released

No thank you to Mr. Shanle!

I'm not saying he couldn't be an affordable depth guy, but enough is enough - it's time to make a fresh start, and what better move is there to make a separation from the earlier defenses than not to re-sign him?!
