Ryan's 3-4 defense is an attacking-style defense that places an emphasis on putting pressure on the quarterback.

Some of the Saints' defenders will be somewhat familiar with a few of Ryan's defensive principles, as former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams sometimes employed similar defensive play calls, Jordan said.

In Ryan's two seasons in Dallas both of the Cowboys' outside linebackers flourished with Demarcus Ware (31 sacks) and Anthony Spencer (17) combining for 48 sacks. Such news should make the Saints' situational outside rushers Junior Galette and Martez Wilson, who have combined for just 13½ sacks the past two seasons, happy.

"The 3-4 is what I ran in college and it's something similar to we ran with coach Gregg Williams," Jordan said. Hopefully it won't be that hard to transition from the 4-3 to the 3-4. It sounds like what I have been doing.

"It's a blitzing, attacking system, which will be fun. I think it suits me. Without a doubt (Galette and Wilson) will be the most excited about the situation. As long as everybody is on the same page I can't see why this wouldn't be a great fit for us."

Some of this sounds more like a slap at Spags than it does embracing Ryan.

Lets hope he can get our D to even an average level, maybe our defense needs a shouty get in your face kind of coach, GW brought an attitude to our D in 2009 and we played nasty
We looked scared of everyone on defense last year, maybe rob ryan will bring that aggressive hard hitting D to us

Vilma needs not to say anything, his days are # in a Saints uniform along with a few others that should have been gone a few years ago. It's going to get interesting in the days to come!!

Didn't Vilma struggle in the 3-4 defense when he was with the Jets?

Here's to hoping that the shift to the 3-4 elevates Wilson and Galette's game to the levels of the Von Miller/Elvis Dumervil duo. I could see it happening. It's not out of the realm of possibility.

I can see Wilson becoming pro-bowl caliber in the 3-4...

Galette, not so much...

Vilma claims that his problems in NY were about his knee and not the 3-4.

Re: New Orleans Saints players applaud the hiring of Rob Ryan

I'd still like to see us retain Vilma for a few reasons (although cut and then re-signed for minimum or damn near). He is a vocal leader of our defense and players respect him. He is a good tackler and instinctive football player. He needs protection that the 3-4 doesn't offer but I think we can use him in an ILB role where he subs in and out with a younger player. He isn't terrible in coverage and he could be that QB/RB spy player or on overload blitz packages.

He was in his prime in NY and asked to be the work horse of that defense and he just isn't good enough at getting off a block as he needs to be for a 3-4 to fit him. Lofton would be that guy here and hopefully free up Vilma to more advantageous situations.

Re: New Orleans Saints players applaud the hiring of Rob Ryan

Vilma has lost a step, he doesn't possess the speed he once had...

He wasn't big enough to handle the 3-4 with the Jets in his prime, what makes you think he can now?

Lofton will have his own responsibilities, Hawthorne would be a better fit next to Lofton in his natural ILB position...

I'm still not sold on Ryan but if the players like him thats whats most important. But if I don't misremember they were really happy to get Spags too...

Funny you bring him up, he has the size to play inside, not sure about the speed though. I would like to draft at least 1 inside lb. in the draft or pick up one in FA. I like Lofton but I'm unsure how he does in Ryans scheme?

A middle of the pack defense - say, 18th in yards allowed or 15th-16th in points allowed is just what the doctor ordered for our team. That would have probably allowed us to go 11-5 or even better last season given how many points we put up on offense.

Middle of the pack is a hell of a lot better than worse defense in NFL history

#1 offense + #15-16 defence = Championship!

As long as the players buy into his program and Ryan can actually institute his plan then I'm in! Get to coach Rob.

I don't know, this team has shown they aren't afraid of anonymously bad mouthing a DC to the media.

I can't say I'm thrilled with the hire but I'm willing to give him my support. But damn, Rob, go buy some effing Preference by L'oreal for that grey mop.

Yes, I can really see Wilson doing big things this year in Ryan's system.

From the dense all we really need is decent. In 2011 we didn't even have that and we went 13-3.
