Sean Payton on Sirius
Payton on was Sirius this morning. Cliff notes as follows:
1. People talking too much about 3-4 vs 4-3 when majority of snaps are not in these formations 2. Vilma is going stay a saint - stay on weak side. 3. Lofton is a big guy will stay in strong side position 4. Payton had an hour long discussion with rob Ryan yesterday talking about which players would fit which schemes. That's all I remember. Looks vilma is not going anywhere. |
Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
Waiting for the bombs to drop. We have to get under the cap and also free up some room at the same time. Vilma seemed like an easy target, guess not.

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
Its almost free agency and draft time, I wouldn't believe anything that comes out right now. IMO Vilma is one of the first to get cut, somehow someway the Saints have to get under the salary cap. Vilma and Will Smith look like the easiest targets

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
I think Vilma stays because he's probably fine with restructuring his contract to get the cap number down. Will Smith is the biggest cap relief. If he's cut you get 10mil in cap relief. Vilma 6mil. Probably easier to restructure Vilma more than Smith. So I can see why he would stay. And I don't mind it...I truly believe Vilma wants to retire a Saint.

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
I can see Vilma staying at a lower cost, it's not like Ryan stays in the 3-4 exclusively.
He mixes in a lot of the 4-6 in short yardage situations, the 4-6 with zone coverage behind it... |

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
I actually prefer Vilma staying as long as he restructures. He's a good guy and a good leader.

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
As long as it gets fixed.

Rob usually blitzs out of it in short yardage situations with zone coverage behind it... |
Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
I don't know about you guys but when I hear the word "zone", I cringe

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
vilma on the weakside makes sense because he is our best lb in coverage. besides the fire sale we are all looking for will probably start next year or the year after.
slow move to a 34, so 43 will probably be used more than we think |
Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
I missed it.............thanks for posting.

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
I believe Vilma will be a Saints this year n He will be 100% this year He is a smart guy n good leader I think we need him out there on the field...
|
Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
In all honesty I'm glad Vilma is staying. Kinda bothered me how some folks here wanted him gone because of the bounty issue saying its causing drama...
Thing is the guy is a Saint and our guy. I'm glad Sean Payton see's that. |
Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
I would love to see an up-grade over Vilma, Payton needs to let him go, much like your favorite pair of old shoes that are kept for sentimental values, you know the ones that has holes in them and stink, those kind.

Great, I was sad to see vilma go. Hes still got it I think. Something to be said for ray lewis like experience on the field. Even if he has lost a step.
|
I think vilma is our ray Lewis. He won't be traded or cut or leave until he wins a Super Bowl with the saints again.

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
I have no doubt now that Vilma restructures and remains a Saint.

Re: Sean Payton on Sirius
Vilma is gone... Hawthorne is a better fit anyway.
If Vilma does stay it hurts us financially with the cap and hurts us on the field. We know he is no good in the 3-4, and he has only gotten older. I frankly dont care if he is a nice guy or not... doesn't mean he should be on the field.. God forbid we get another Scott Shanle situation ... llol |

Did he say anything about the ridicules collar on our jersys ? Or that we would get gold back and not be black and tan any more ?
I will never buy another Nike product, that irritates the hell out me. FIX THE UNIFORMS!!!!!! |

But Mangini ran a true 2 gap 3-4 where both ILB's take on guards regularly. Rob's 3-4 doesn't do that to both ILB's. One ILB, the MIKE will take on the 2 gaps on the strongside of the line, but both the SAM and the WILL have nearly identical responsibilities as the WILL and SAM in a traditional 4-3. Vilma at the WILL in Rob's 3-4 is no different than what Vilma played under Spags and Gregg Williams, who ran a lot of 3-4 when he was here. Mangini's 3-4 and Rob's 3-4 are apples and oranges. My guess is he re-structures and plays an integral part of our defense next year. Payton praised him throughout that interview and all but guaranteed Vilma will be back and better than ever. Here's a decent diagram of how Vilma (W) will be used... http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/68...r_O_medium.PNG Notice the RDE is over the guard. In Mangini's 3-4 the RDE was over the Tackle, leaving both ILB's to take on OG's. |

But he needs to restructure, and that being said Hawthorne would still be the better option, or have we forgot that Hawthorne was a pro-bowl caliber player with SEA.... Vilma hasn't been healthy for 2 years and when he bounced on and off the injured report during the 2011 season everyone thought Dun-Bar looked better on the field. Now was that due to the injury, maybe. However, the last time Vilma looked like a great player was in 2010. Since then its been downhill for him, and I am sure the injuries have played a large part in that. |
