Re: Saints Nation: Five Free Agents the Saints Could Target
I see no reason that the Ravens do not re-sign Ed Reed and allow him to finish his already great legacy there. Would love to have the guy though. He is a playmaker, and the Saints desperately need another Sharper. If the Ravens do part ways and cutting dead weight/restructuring some contracts frees up space, go for it.
Derek Cox is a good player, and wouldn't be bad for this team. However, we have needs elsewhere. We need to think a little cheaper here. Casey Hampton would be a downgrade from Bunkley, who is fit for the 3-4. He was out of place in the Spags 4-3 scheme. For the 3-4, this is where he will shine. Nick Barnett is a good player, and we do need a linebacker, however that need is for OLB. 2 guys on the current roster that I feel fit the mold just fine are Lofton and David Hawthorne. Lofton was one of the few bright spots from the defense last season, and will continue to develop. Hawthorne was injured a lot last season, but he was an outstanding talent in Seattle. I look for him to have a bound-back season. Andre Carter would be a nice fit here, but the guy is aging. If he would come for a cheap price I would be all for it, especially to add even more depth. I already feel good about the defensive line, this would make it stronger. |

Re: Saints Nation: Five Free Agents the Saints Could Target
Ive been watching Hampton. I really think hes a good signing for us. He has a lot left in the tank and is a true NT. Steelers defense is no joke and he knows his job. Hes a experienced beast, and believe he can teach a NT we get in the draft how to do the position. In my mind hes one of the best values + experience + production in the FA.
I do not believe hes on his way down. All NT's get knee surgeries sooner or later. He wont be expensive either if Pit decides to let him shop. Bunkley is no answer and not a pure NT, not will to risk a season on him. |

Hampton and an NT in the draft? Probably not both, but our draft choices never cease to surprise the heck out of me. I'm guessing they grab one other NT to spell Bunkley, either through the draft or FA. I think we have too many needs to go for two. Fortunately, it's not a bad year to be shopping for one.
