Drew Brees willing to consider anything that will help New Orleans Saints' salary cap issues
1 Attachment(s)
Apparently, Drew Brees is at least willing to listen to the New Orleans Saints about possibly restructuring his contract to give the team salary cap relief.
When asked by WWL-AM if he might be open to restructuring his contract in a similar fashion to the way Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's new contract is constructed, the Saints quarterback said, "I am always willing to consider anything that will help the team or the cap situation." http://imgick.nola.com/home/nola-med...264-mmmain.jpg Brees' salary cap figure for 2013 is $17.4 million, which is the highest on the Saints roster. Of course, Brees' salary cap figure jumps significantly the following three seasons -- $18.4 million in 2014, $26.4 million in 2015, $27.4 million in 2016. The Saints will likely continue to work on contract restructuring with players leading up to free agency, but it's unclear if the Saints have approached Brees to re-work the deal he signed less than a year ago. It's never completely clear just how far over the salary cap the Saints sit as of Wednesday, but it's likely the Saints still have work to do financially. Link Back |
Kristian Garic: Brees is ''willing to consider'' restructuring contract
WWL - AM870 | FM105.3 | News | Talk | Sports - Kristian: Brees Is ''willing To Consider'' Restructuring Contract
In the wake of Tom Brady restructuring his contract to save the New England Patriots salary cap space and remain competitive, Saints fans have been wondering if Drew Brees would be willing to do something similiar to help out the Black and Gold. I asked Drew today, "Since word of Brady restructuring his deal to save the Pats cap room, fans have been asking if you might be willing to do something similar?" Brees responded via text, "I am always willing to consider anything that will help the team or the cap situation." The Saints are cash-strapped trying to get under the $121 million salary cap on or before the new league year begins on March 12th. Brees signed a record-breaking 5 year $100 million contract in the summer of last year. Brees' salary cap figure is $17.4 million for the 2013 season, and escalates rapidly in the following seasons. In 2014 it rises to $18.4 million, and in 2015 it skyrockets to $26.4 million, then to $27.4 million in 2016. So, do I think he will do it? Well, Brees has never been a selfish player, and is driven to win. His legacy has been about winning and getting back to the Super Bowl, not necessarly about his money. If he should restructure his deal, he would not be giving up anything now or in the long-term. We'll find out what happens in the next two weeks. |
Re: Kristian Garic: Brees is ''willing to consider'' restructuring contract
It worked out better for Brady. It's a no-brainer that ANY player would restructure for a better deal.

Of course he would do it.His guaranteed salary would increase.

Re: Kristian Garic: Brees is ''willing to consider'' restructuring contract
Drew Brees (QB)-New Orleans Saints: $17.4 million
The Saints need to clear close to $15 million in cap space by March 12. New Orleans must rid themselves of almost $15 million in cap obligations by March 12. Brees has the highest cap number on the team and the NFL’s fifth-highest 2013 quarterback cap number. He can generate $6,562,500 of cap room by turning $8.75 million of his $9.75 million 2013 base salary into a signing bonus. His 2013 cap number would become $10,837,500 in his reworked deal. Brees may not be comfortable restructuring his contract because his 2015 and 2016 cap numbers, which are $26.4 million and $27.4 million, would each increase by $2,187,500. - See more at: Ten players who could restructure their contracts | National Football Post |
