Saints restructure Hawthorne's deal
1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints are continuing to work toward getting under the salary cap. In addition to the contract restructure for guard Ben Grubbs that we already told you about, they made another move.
The Saints have cleared an additional $2.05 million in cap space by restructuring the contract of linebacker David Hawthorne, according to a league source. http://gridironfans.com/forums/attac...-hawthorne.png Hawthorne had been scheduled to receive a $3 million roster bonus on the third day of the league year. But the Saints erased that by giving Hawthorne a $3 million signing bonus on Tuesday. Instead of having the scheduled roster bonus all count toward this year’s cap figure, the signing bonus allows the $3 million to be spread out over the life of Hawthorne’s contract. Hawthorne’s cap figure has dropped from $4.76 million to $2.51 million. Saints restructure Hawthorne's deal - NFC South Blog - ESPN |

This is starting to look like any other financial "Bubble".
The teams are paying out guaranteed $ for the ability to win now. If these dudes get hurt or suck, the Saints are on the hook for tons of "dead money" in their cap. Teams are banking on the cap increasing dramatically when the new tv contract kicks in. Are they right for gambling this way? |

Re: Saints restructure Hawthorne's deal
There must have been a long line of players waiting outside of Loomis' office with each getting a check handed to them, much like Christmas bonuses in a company.
