New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Expected to Let Go of Two Defensive Linemen
The New Orleans Saints continue to work their way under the salary cap and with the restructuring of defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley’s contract, the team is well on their way. The team still has a lot of work to do to get under the cap so it would make sense to not bring back some players.
The Saints have already cut ties with some players, and more players will either be cut or not re-signed. Two players that might not be re-signed are defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis and defensive end Turk McBride. Ellis is essentially a top-ten draft bust that never panned out for the Saints. Ellis was selected by the Saints with the seventh overall pick back in 2008 and has not done much for the team during his tenure. He has only recorded 12.5 sacks, and has never been the dynamic pass rusher the Saints hoped he could be. Furthermore, Ellis is set to be an unrestricted free agent and it seems like a no-brainer that he will not be re-signed. Also, the Saints have not had any contract talks with him, nor have they had talks with unrestricted free agent McBride for that matter. Finally. Ellis needed to go two years ago. He may be one of our biggest busts since Sullivan.

I can see why you would want to compare Ellis and Sullivan but IMHO thats not really fair. Sullivan was HORRIBLE in every way, attitude, shape, play etc. Ellis is just not as good as we had hoped. If he had been a 4th round pick he would be ok and some team will surely want him in a rotation at DT in a 4-3. He is a good player, just not a great one.

How can you "free up cap space" by not re-signing players who are not using any cap space in the upcoming season?!

They have no earthly idea of what a draft bust is. |

I'd resign him for the minimum with lots of incentives. Better deal than he'd get from other teams. Considering the budget, we're not going to attract anyone better. |

Sounds good to me. He can back up Bunkley.

I do get where you're coming from, but I'd personally like to see them turn the page on the failed project called Ellis. |

But then again, one can always wonder if it's really the players fault he never lived up to his draft pick number or if it's the scouting department's fault that the player was picked where he was..? |

A bust is a pick that simply cannot play in the NFL. Good grief, there are literally 100's of 1st rounders over the last decade that were more of a bust than Sedric Ellis. I'm disappointed that anyone would consider Ellis a bust. I think either they don't know what a bust is or don't know much about football. I can agree with anyone that says he didn't quite live up to his draft position, but claiming he's a bust is just silly. |
Re: New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Expected to Let Go of Two Defensive Linemen
Take Morganna for instance, there was a BUST!!

Out of interest, say he agreed to a fair contract or even a one year deal.
Does anyone think a 3-4 would suit Ellis? |

Better than the 4-3? I'd say no, since he is undersized and doesn't have the upper body strength to compensate for that weakness. Ellis is the smallest DT and/or DE the Saints have on their roster, and he is an inch shorter than Bunkley who some seem to think is too small to be an effective NT in the 3-4 (despite the proof of the opposite). He is undoubtedly best suited to be a 4-3 DT in my opinion, but that isn't really saying much. |
Re: New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Expected to Let Go of Two Defensive Linemen
Yeah... for sure he did not live up to the press clippings... but if he takes the league min, he might provide depth.

Re: New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Expected to Let Go of Two Defensive Linemen
Plan and simple.... bust or not in someones opinion means nothing to me. Let the dude walk, I am up for half of that side of the ball walk. I know this can't happen but ... I wish that it could.

Re: New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Expected to Let Go of Two Defensive Linemen
Sentimentally, Ellis has been a Saint for a while. He's been through the rebuilding years and I can understand the soft spot some of you have for him. But really whether you want to call him a bust or not, he hasn't stepped it up to the first round NFL level you'd wish for either by draft number or salary. His production hasn't been even close. Looking at decent/good NT's, they aren't very tall. Most of them are around Sedrick's height, but they pretty much outweigh him by 40+ pounds. They need to be wide. Ellis is not wide or overpowering. Put him in to rest Bunk and you'll see the offense heading right at him every time. He isn't 3-4 material even for free. We need to send him down the road and get a man mountain (Appalachian, not Rocky Mountain style) in there.
