First Day Of Free Agency

Well, today we lost Bushrod, Daniel and Herring. Not bad.
We were losers because we kept Will Smith. He might get a sack next year. We'll have to wait and see if he has an impact in the 3-4.
We did keep Vilma aroound a little longer, which may or may not be a good thing. How does the 1st day of free agency look to you?

About like the first day of FA since Loomis has been here.

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

Nothing's really changed for us. We still have the same needs on defense as we had before today, but now we have to figure out who to plug in at left tackle. It seems like we weren't that interested in keeping Bushrod so I'm sure Loomis and Payton have some ideas to replace him. All in all, I'd say it was a pretty uneventful day.

Over-reaction Tuesday on b&g!!!!!!!!!!

Free-Agency has been open for all of 5 hrs....... Yeesh

TheOak 03-12-2013 07:54 PM

All of those going through their first NFL season please stand up.

We are fine. Albeit I would feel better about today had we lost Vilma and Smith.

The moral of today, we lost players that we needed to lose. We have a long road ahead in free-agency, draft, Etc...

Lets not lose out breath the first day.

We may find, or already have, trade partners to dump these dudes, now that their contracts are friendlier.

Just wait we got a big signing coming on D and it may involve a player with one initial D.

Danno 03-12-2013 08:16 PM

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

It all depends on what Smith and Vilma signed for.

If its less than 3 mill, we scored!

If its about 3 mill, meh...

If its over 3 mill, I think we over-paid for both

papz 03-12-2013 08:26 PM

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

I think it's probably around that 3 mark. If it's around 2.5, I do think it's a solid score.

All in all, today has gone pretty much expected. We all knew Bushrod to Chicago was a very likely scenario and within the past few days, Chase has been getting some attention. I would love for us to make a free agent score, but our hands are tied right now.

What we need to be doing is stop focusing on what everyone else is doing. That's out of our control... it's only going to make you miserable. Some of these teams are trying to be contenders... be happy we don't need as much help as they do. Well, I'd like to think we are... but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

Will Smith's base went from 9mil to 3mil
J. Vilma's base went from 4.75mil to 1mil
So we saved 9.75 mil in cap space thos yr

Agreed. Bushrod is making like Mini-Drew Brees money...
Quote:

Bushrod becomes the highest-paid offensive lineman in franchise history. His $35.965 million, five-year contract averages $7.19 million per season, exceeding the contract John Tait received in 2003 when the Bears signed him away from the Chiefs. Bushrod receives $17.715 guaranteed and now J'Marcus Webb, the starter at left tackle the past two seasons, will have to figure as a backup or perhaps in a competition at right tackle.

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

$7.2M/yr isn't silly money for a Pro Bowl LT, but we all know the story of Bushrod better than the people from Chicago, which is why it seems so high to us.

I wonder what type of a deal WInston is looking for..?

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

1) Thought this might happen. good luck to cutler
Bushrod becomes the highest-paid offensive lineman in franchise history. His $35.965 million, five-year contract averages $7.19 million per season, $17.715 guaranteed

2) Chase for 3 mill as a back does stink but we have been through this before and he deserved the extra cheese and good luck to him :brood:

3) ok that is about what i expected

Will Smith's base went from 9mil to 3mil
J. Vilma's base went from 4.75mil to 1mil
So we saved 9.75 mil in cap space this yr

Now we got a little wiggle room under the cap. what about 5 mill? plus we can redo another contract or two, say Harper's to start. Dano and the gang are doing the calcs now i am sure ;)

So a tackle and/or a defensive addition is very possible.

Conclusion
Given the cap situation to begin with and were we are now imo it may not have been the best results in day one but not that bad either.

Now lets see what happens up to the draft, during the draft then count our chickens that hatched

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

I wonder how well Bushrod will do with Cutler being his QB. Jay cutler has a cannon but at times seems to hold on to the ball just a tad too long.
This could end up making Bushrod and the rest of the line look bad.. time will tell but I don't blame the guy for going for his payday.

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

lmao Cutler does not have Drews pocket presence and i am almost willing to bet Bushrod has seen his last pro bowl

Which is exactly why we need to let things play out before we all ostrich.

I suppose most people make their cake out of eggbeaters in a carton and never have to break a few shells to end up with Red Velvet Cake..

Yummmm

Lets see how Bushrod does with out a good Center and Guard tandem on the side of him. Its not all QB..

The line is about cohesion and how well they all play together and pick up assignments.

Re: First Day Of Free Agency

Bushrod will do fine. He'll occasionally get eaten alive but will likely play very well for 14 of 16 games.

I remember most of us thought Jonathan Goodwin was a product of our system (me included) and was grossly overpaid by San Fran. Oops!
