New Orleans Saints even their record to .500 in first three days of free agency

I cobbled together the snippets from all my posts over the last two days into one, big, newspaper-ready summary for Friday morning. So consider this your mid-week New Orleans Saints review:

The first days of free agency can be a roller-coaster ride for NFL teams (and for their fans). This year has certainly been no exception for the Saints.

They took some big hits on Tuesday - losing Jermon Bushrod and Chase Daniel and causing a bit of anguish among fans who don't have the stomach for the Saints' patient, measured approach to free agency. But then they rallied back on Thursday with a great addition, signing up-and-coming young cornerback Keenan Lewis away from the Pittsburgh Steelers and bringing him back to his hometown.

In other words, they pretty much did what they've done in free agency ever since the 2006 rebuilding year - searching for value instead of making a big splash early.

We do this every year, and it works. We sign mid-tier free agents to fill holes, occasionaly land a high dollar stud, the pick BPA in the draft.

We typically do very well in free agency, but have drafted pretty poorly for several years now.

The draft is key to us being able to spend high dollars on free agency. Quite a few of these teams that are spending big money have the luxury in doing so because they hit big with their draft picks. Being able to keep them on their rookie contracts while they are producing big numbers allow them to improve other areas on their ball club. While Loomis is a very good GM, and as we discussed earlier this offseason, the scouting department needs to up their game. We want to sustain long term success... not til when Brees' contract runs out.

Poor drafting is what has been holding us back. We have the same opportunities as any other team, but don't take advantage of it in the draft. Do we even know what talent looks like?
I hope that Payton addresses this short coming now!!!:brood:

I hope they go after Volmer, then we'd be at .500

True Dat.

The draft is Loomis' Achilles' heel.
