Elvis?
Dumervil is now a FA.
Bronco's didn't file new contract in time it was a reduced contract and we now know what he would settle for. I'm sure we could make use of him. http://m.usatoday.com/article/news/1990913 |
Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
Remember that Elvis Dumervil salary reduction news from earlier on Friday?
It might be time to forget all about that. Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos have released Dumervil after they did not get his paperwork regarding the reduction in salary from $12 million to $8 million until after the 2 p.m. MT deadline that made his original salary guaranteed. According to Klis, the Broncos received the fax from Dumervil at 2:07 p.m. MT, seven minutes and one second after the Broncos had to pull the trigger to release Dumervil and avoid being on the hook for the full $12 million. The team could still re-sign Dumervil, but there would be different salary cap ramifications because Dumervil’s contract ran beyond the 2013 season. So a settled situation that looked like another offseason win for the Broncos and John Elway has suddenly turned into a mess. They’ve got no Dumervil and will now have to scramble to find a way to bring him back or convince another free agent pass rusher to join their defense. Never a dull moment in the NFL and, perhaps, a final sign that the fax machine is far from the most reliable way to be conducting business in 2013. Re: Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
I'm pretty sure we can't afford what he is wanting. As much as I like the guy, I think we have our Dumervil-type player for a 3-4 defense in Junior Galette. Do I know that for certain? No. That's why I said I think. There are other needs to be addressed on this team like left tackle, maybe another corner, WR depth, a back-up QB and tight end, and possibly a defensive tackle.

Re: Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
Hubbs is fuming right about now. Who still uses fax machines in 2013? Maybe next time, they can snail mail someone's contract over. #fail
Jeff Darlington did have the funniest tweet re: the Dumervil situation. I was in tears from laughing so hard. Jeff Darlington @JeffDarlington Meanwhile, Elvis Dumervil just finished chiseling his signature into a slab of rock. It's now headed down the Oregon Trail toward Denver. |
Re: Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
More Excuses?
Regardless of the machinations or the motivations, blame for the fact that defensive end Elvis Dumervil no longer is a member of the Broncos falls on all parties involved. The NFL, like many businesses, runs on deadlines. When making decisions up against a deadline, both sides need to allow enough time to get the deal done. And if the deal doesn’t get done in time, both sides share the blame equally. If Dumervil’s agent, Marty Magid, needed more time to study the revised documents, he needed to say so. If the Broncos needed more time to process the paperwork, they needed to say so. The end result was a clusterfudge that makes everyone look bad. That said, the real question is whether one side or the other was up to something. The Broncos had nothing to gain by creating the impression that they were forced to cut Dumervil, unless they somehow decided from a P.R. perspective that the accidental departure of Dumervil would be received more favorably by the fan base than the intentional release of Dumervil. In contrast, Dumervil could have duped the Broncos into guaranteeing his entire contract if the team failed to cut him before the end of the business day. Alternatively, Magid may have decided to force the release after word got out that Dumervil would make $8 million in 2013 — and after possibly hearing from another team that would be willing to pay Dumervil more than that. We suspect the latter, based on Magid’s comments to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. “We haven’t talked yet, but I think we all needed to take a deep breath and then we’ll see where it goes,’” Magid said. “Unfortunately, it didn’t work out the way we wanted, but everything happens for a reason and it’s not like this anybody’s fault. This wasn’t just a case of an agent taking too long to send something. It’s not anyone’s fault, but Elvis is a free agent now and we’ll see how that process plays out.” If both sides intended to honor the deal that was negotiated on Friday, both sides will promptly fix the situation and move forward with a new deal. It was painted as an accident; any other outcome indicates that the accident really wasn’t. Still, if the truth is that the Broncos were snookered, they helped make that happen by not establishing a clear deadline and ensuring that all documents were signed in sufficient time to permit the revised contract to become official. 8mill? Where is that coming from? And that's the old price. The new price is more.
We need to either start combing through the Canadian league waiver wire or the Sumo league cut list because they shoot horses as lame as what is left here. |
Re: Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
A bizarre set of circumstances pushed the Denver Broncos to release prolific pass-rushing linebacker Elvis Dumervil on Friday afternoon. Dumervil doesn't appear to be in the New Orleans Saints' plans, though, as the Saints aren't actively pursuing the former Broncos defender, according to a source.
The Saints are certainly in the market for a pass rusher, and Dumervil would fit the bill in the Saints' new 3-4 defensive scheme. But Dumervil's price tag is probably to high for the cash-strapped Saints at this point. It was widely reported Dumervil agreed to a restructured contract with Denver dropping his base salary from $12 million to $8 million instead of being released. But in a wild twist, Dumervil didn't fax the signed contract back to the Broncos in time before a 2 p.m. central deadline pushing the Broncos to release him. Dumervil signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract in 2010 after compiling 17 sacks in 2009. He tallied 11 sacks last season in Denver. New Orleans was willing to spend a hefty sum on linebacker Paul Kruger once free agency opened and finished as the runner-up for Kruger, a source said. I think he's too old...if anything I want us to go after a tackle in FA and go after a pass rusher in the draft.

Re: Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
He's a good player who the Saints could certainly use, but I firmly believe that there are better ways to spend the cap space which would be needed in order to bring him over to New Orleans - ways that can bare fruit long into the future when Dumervil is no longer an impact player.

Re: Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
With Elvis Dumervil available thanks to Friday’s fax machine follies, teams other than Broncos are getting interested.
According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens “have serious interest” in the pass-rusher, who’d play outside linebacker in their 3-4. The Patriots and Titans are also mentioned as possibilities (while the Patriots could use him, there’s also the possibility they’re just messing with Denver). If the Ravens could get him in now, at the reduced rate pass-rushers are getting, it would make the business decision to let Paul Kruger walk away to Cleveland look that much better. Re: Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
Broncos offer Elvis Dumervil contract
After the fax faux pas and denied appeals, the Denver Broncos and free agent Elvis Dumervil may be close to a reconciliation. "We've offered Elvis a contract," Broncos team president John Elway said Tuesday. "We'd like to have Elvis back." Elway did not delve into specifics of the offer. Dumervil and the Broncos agreed upon a restructured contract that would have paid him $8 million in 2013. However, Dumervil's agent did not get the paperwork faxed to the team until seven minutes after the NFL deadline on Friday. The Broncos were forced to cut Dumervil because they would have had to pay him $12 million in 2013 otherwise. Dumervil fired agent Marty Magid on Saturday. The Broncos are open to re-signing Dumervil and he reportedly wants to return. But there are salary-cap issues at play. Baltimore and Pittsburgh also have reportedly expressed interest in the 29-year-old pass-rusher. Dumervil signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract in 2010 when Josh McDaniels was coaching the team and before Elway joined the Denver front office. Dumervil had 11 sacks last season, second on the team behind Von Miller. Dumervil led the league with 17 sacks in 2009. Link Back Should Elvis fax it in? |
Re: Fax snafu makes Dumervil available
Dumervil is good, but betting the farm on the guy is a total Dan Snyder type of move. We would have to gut the team, which would send a signal to the team that he was more important than anyone else, and he would come in with a king-of-the-team attitude before playing a single down for us.
Long story short, if we went after Dumervil or Reed, we can say goodbye to our team culture and locker room chemistry. |
