Trade down value-how far are you willing to drop?
Assuming the old trade value chart is still fairly accurate, it looks like the value of trading down is as follows...
Trade down around 5 spots = gain a mid 3rd rounder Trade down around 10 spots = gain a late 2nd rounder Trade down around 15 spots = gain a mid 2nd rounder Trade down around 20 spots = gain an early 2nd rounder With all the talent in this draft, I think trading down about 10 spots looks really tempting. We'd probably be better off trading down only 5, because I still think you can get top 15 talent at pick 20. Thoughts? |

Not sure the value holds up... 5 spots ought to be worth more than a mid-third rounder... I mean, just how much did we give up for Ingram? Methinks 5 spots deserves a number two at where we would be anyway.

Re: Trade down value-how far are you willing to drop?
There are only about 8-9 defensive players that I like in this draft, we have a slim chance at getting one at 15, and no chance any lower than that. Given that, I believe we can get a similar talent to anyone outside those top 9 all the way into the second round, so I wouldn't mind dropping 15 spots and potentially grabbing 2 guys in that bracket, but dropping 5 or 10 spots would just eliminate our chances of getting a top tier talent without giving us the opportunity at 2 second tier guys. However, I could see a draft day trade down in that range if most of the defensive talent is pulled off the board early (likely) and we have no chance at any of them any way.

I'd be willing to trade down 10-15 spots depending on who we target. Picking up a second round pick would really be useful this year, even if it was to only pizz off Godhell.

Kinda depends on who's available at the 15 spot.

Re: Trade down value-how far are you willing to drop?
I would probably be willing to drop the entire 20 spots. we would have just about the same value in players if we dropped 10 or 20. 2 early in the 2nd would give us alot more possibilities. I would hate to reach for someone at 15. This draft seems a little bit light on talent. 15 through 30.

Re: Trade down value-how far are you willing to drop?
A part of me would like to see the Saints trade down. Our track record has not been great with first round picks. If we could trade down 5 to 10 slots, and pick up an extra third, I'd be okay with this. We don't seem to get good value for our first rounders, save for Bush or maybe Jordan. Loomis, Payton and the scouting department seem to get good value out of their picks later in the draft.
But we really could use an extra pick or two... and we really need to hit on the picks this draft. |

Now, using our history from the 2008 NFL draft, we moved from the 10th pick to the 7th pick in a consolation trade with New England after failing to get a fair deal from Kansas City when trying to select Glenn Dorsey with KC's No. 5 pick... In the trade exchanging our 1R (10, Jerod Mayo, TEN) and 3R (78, Shawn Crable) for the Patriots' 1R (7, Sed Ellis, USC) and 5R (164, Carl Nicks, Neb)... Ironically, or commonly when reflecting on the Saints recent draft history, the lowest pick was the best of the players involved... If we moved down those few spots, I'd expect the same kind of deal where we could give up our 6R and gain a 3R for moving five spots; that would be an equitable trade; or I'd be aggressive and give a 5R for another trading team's second round pick... |
