Martez Wilson ready for breakout season in Saints new 3-4 scheme
The New Orleans Saints move to switch to a 3-4 defense for the 2013 season could form the perfect storm for third-year veteran Martez Wilson.
The 2012 campaign finished in a disaster for the Saints on defense. The unit set an NFL all-time high mark by allowing the most yards (7,042) in a single season. The aftershocks of that poor showing led the dismissal of first-year defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. The demands on the defensive unit were extensive for each player, individually and collectively, to coordinate with multiple responsibilities while counteracting multiple offensive formations. Many variables that the opposing offense demonstrated required numerous checks and adjustments. All had to be synchronized by the defense immediately. A large share of the responsibility in the Spagnuolo system last season was thrust upon the free agent middle linebacker Curtis Lofton, who had to make all the master checks and had to know where everyone was lining up. Another younger player was facing a steep learning curve for multiple reasons. A third round draft pick in 2011, Wilson has lined up in different roles the past two seasons, initially at linebacker (2011) and then at defensive end (2012). "At first I liked being at defensive end, permanently I did not," Martez explained. "I had to re-learn the four-point stance. At first I was just rushing. It was all a learning experience." Understanding his role and responsibility has been a challenge, but Wilson is used to learning how to play new roles on the field. "I've played all (defensive line) positions: end, standup tackle, one-tech (NT), three-tech (DT). I can drop from middle or weakside linebacker. There are a lot of 3-tech and 5-tech relationships, but I like to stand up and see. Even in high school as a defensive lineman, I stood up so that I could read and react." I think he has the talent and athleticism to flourish in a 3-4! I can't wait to see his break out year!

I tagged him as a player that my son should watch for future greatness at training camp.
I have a very good track record in this regard. My previous pick was Jimmy Graham. My kiddo respects my opinions on these things and I don't want to lose face. I stand by my amateur analysis of Martez. He also shares a common last name with my son and I. He was nice to my son on a couple of occasions which rates high in my book. |

Kid is already amazing, most people only have one breakout season, this will be his third in a row...of course that record is tied by his classmate Mark Ingram.

Ingram, who I really like, has been given slightly more opportunity. But, both have been stuck behind '09 veterans when it comes to playing time. I love the vets but.............. |

I would love having Wilson on one side and say Barkevious Mingo at the other OLB position, that would be rough on any OL keping up with that speed.

I love when players get to the point of attack quickly. But, they need to tackle rather than blow people up when they get there. That's the difference between LSU and ALA Def. It seems to me that it is also the difference between Saints and 9ers Def. Tackling is a necessity. |
Re: Martez Wilson ready for breakout season in Saints new 3-4 scheme
Great athletic skills don't always translate into a great football player. OLB in the 3-4 seems to be his most natural position. He's flashed a few times. He has potential. But, thinking he's going to have a "breakout" year is probably wishful thinking. He can't have less production than Shanle though. LOL.

Martez chasing down and planting Newton in the turf is still a great highlight. I expect to see more like that this year from him if he finally gets his chance.

I really hope this guy is as good as we all think he's gonna be in this new scheme. But if not,we can use him as a wideout if toon doesn't perform

Breakout Season, oh boy...
...just make the other team's quarterback fall down already... ...and before he can hand the ball off or throw the pass... |
