Linebacker Victor Butler coming to New Orleans on Thursday to visit Saints

Phoenix - The New Orleans Saints will host free-agent linebacker Victory Butler on a visit Thursday, according to a league source. The Saints are looking for outside linebackers as they convert to a 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

Butler, who is 6 feet 2 and 245 pounds, played under Ryan with the Dallas Cowboys. The 25-year-old had 25 tackles and three sacks last season. He was a fourth-round pick by the Cowboys out of Oregon State in 2009.

CBSSports.com first reported the news of his visit.

5 mill i think and about time.

if Jr got 4+ mill a year he will be about the same

next Brad Jones – GB

or a QB

He might be a good addition to the OLB depth if the price is right, and his signing would take some pressure of the draft.

Then again I really don't know what caliber of a player he really is and if he'll fit into what Ryan is now doing in New Orleans, because it might not be a carbon copy of the scheme he implemented in Dallas.

Well, in any case, it can't hurt to kick some tires.

Galette's deal was supposedly $1.2M/yr average, and sure enough Spotrac has his contract at 3 yr/$3.6M with cap hits of 800K in 2013 and $1.4M in both 2014 and 2015.

Junior Galette Contract, Salaries, and Transactions

...if in fact you meant Galette by Jr..?

But it's really hard to estimate what the cap situation is at the moment, because the details of the Benjamin Watson signing and the Courtney Roby and Ramon Humber re-signings haven't yet been released as far as I know.

This guy really flashed in spot duty. I want him. Every interview I have heard with him has him come off like a well spoken, well raised and humble man. Every interview I have heard speaking about him says he's smart, driven and becoming a better player every day.

This kid is the classic "Solid Back-up with potential for more". I'd love to see our boys pick him up. Loomis can always find a way to make these things work. There is always fat to be trimmed. :-) Besides the obvious flashes of a pass rusher out of Butler, I love his 4 forced fumbles in spot duty over the past 4 seasons. Sacks+FF=Play-maker! Sign him up.

I really thought this visit was going to happen last week, but I'm sure they're just playing it smart and getting a feel for his market value. I'm hopeful that he signs as well. This is a guy who is entering what should be his prime, if there really is more to his game than being a back up. He's also been in the league a few years so you shouldn't have to worry about too many mental breakdowns. Throw in the fact that he gets to keep playing under Ryan and this has the potential to be a fantastic move. Here's hoping.

Oh, and welcome to the board!

lee909 03-21-2013 01:47 AM

Could be a good under the radar signing.I don't think it means we dont sign a pass rusher in the girst round of the draft though. Not unless we trade back anyway.

I think signing with the Saints wuld be a good move for him. He might not be a proven starter yet but he would come into a situation where he would have a leg up on the competition seeing he allready knows the system.

Integral piece of our new DC's system.

Good role player.

Good character.

Motivated to start / right price.

Sounds like our newest Saint!

cap is a pain to figure right now agreed. if they can get Butler contract details to look like Jr ( yes galette) i will be very happy with the cap hit.

this if he does sign should be good news for all those Shanle haters. maybe. Shanle will no give up the starting role without a fight. i do not know what the mix will look at when camp starts but no matter what i would like the youth move at OLB.

Next up ILB i hope

Young ascending free-agents at moderate salaries.

To me, thats how free-agency should be done.

Holder seems to think its likely to happen, tweeted that there's mutual interest

He's pretty much been on point lately

Great news. It makes sense for 6 reasons...

He's a 3-4 backer
Dallas is switching to a 4-3
He played for Ryan for 2 years
We have a need at his position
He shouldn't break the bank
We're not Dallas

Its practically a done deal.

@LarryHolder: I would be surprised if LB Victor Butler doesn't sign with the #Saints. Mutual interest is high.
He's ours.

At worst, he'll be a solid rotational OLB, at best he could be our answer at the SOLB spot, allowing Hawthorne to fight it out with Vilma and Lofton inside.

We seem to be looking only at the players that can come in and start day one. They all have high upside. Next up QB.

If anything happened, it would be announced later today.

If we hear nothing by day's end, then it appears he's asking too much.

We're probably offering between 1-2 million, he's probably asking between 3-4 million. Just a guess tho.

Perhaps since Ryan was at UGA's pro-day yesterday they had to reschedule? Maybe Butler is gonna end up making a weekend out of it
