One of the key requirements of a 3-4 defense. The D-linemen occupy, the LB's attack.

Even Booby Hebert will tell you the one of the main keys to the dome patrol's success was the 3 men in front of them.

As SP stated that one of the biggest reasons he wanted to make the switch to a 3-4 base defense was the fact that the Saints' defense was allowing too many big runs last season, especially through the middle of that defensive front - I'd imagine Coleman would instantly make the interior run defense better when rotated in.
