Sean Payton, coach of the New Orleans Saints, saw James in person for the first time and professed amazement that an athlete of that size — 6 feet 8 inches, 260 or 270 pounds — could play guard. And by that he did not mean pulling guard.

Sure, James could play a handful of positions in the N.F.L., Payton said, then joked, “But we can’t afford him with our cap right now.”
