Michael Mauti... The next Greg Romeus?
According to WDSU's Fletcher Mackel, the New Orleans Saints are taking a look at another draft prospect from Louisiana who also has some family ties to the team as well.
Michael Mauti (6'2", 243 lbs.) was a graduate from Mandeville High School and immediately began playing for Penn State during his freshman year, when he had 26 tackles. What began as a strong presence though tumbled into injury. Mauti has suffered two ACL tears, one in each knee, along with numerous other problems including a sprained ankle and shoulder issues. His durability could and should be the main concern for the Saints as well as other NFL teams. He finished his career at Penn State with 209 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks. four interceptions, and three forced fumbles. Mauti's senior year was his best with 96 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, 3 interceptions, and three forced fumbles. There is a family history with the Saints. Mauti's father Rich, who was a wide receiver for Penn State, played for the Black and Gold from 1977-1983. Mauti received an invite to the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine but because of a knee injury at the end of his senior year he was unable to participate in any drills but did 28 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. He was also unable to participate in Penn State's March 17th Pro Day because of the same injury. Re: Michael Mauti... The next Greg Romeus?
UDFA... sure why not. As long as it take very little money to bring him to camp. The reason why we got Cadet last season was because we were able to give him a large portion of the UDFA bonus. I still want my pick of the litter after the draft.

Re: Michael Mauti... The next Greg Romeus?
He did look good when he could play. Maybe he and greg could share a hospital bed. Sorry, I just don't think we need any more players from Fragile, Italy.

Re: Michael Mauti... The next Greg Romeus?
I prefer giving a roster spot who can survive more than 1 week of training camp before going on IR.
We're a friggin contender with immediate needs on defense. I'm all for planning for the future, as long as it doesn't interfere with the present. |

Re: Michael Mauti... The next Greg Romeus?
Is he Rich Mauti's son, the former Saint?
Yeah... think so... Before his seven years with the Saints, he was running back for the Nittany Lions in the mid-1970s. And his two sons, Patrick and Michael, played there as well. Michael is a fifth-year senior linebacker while Patrick was a walk-on wide receiver from 2005-09. Penn State LB Michael Mauti has visited the Saints and Steelers.
Draft insider Tony Pauline notes that Mauti has been told by doctors that he could be 100 percent ready for contact by July. When healthy, Mauti was Penn State's best defender, but his history in that area will certainly be red flagged by some teams. Source: Tony Pauline on Twitter |
