New Orleans Saints Should Take a Long Hard Look at OT Tyson Clabo

1 Attachment(s)
Former New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod didn’t waste any time taking his talents to the Windy City, where Aaron Kromer, former offensive line/running back coach for the Saints, is now the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.
New orleans head coach Sean Payton expressed in earlier interviews that there are two things that keep him up at night: pass rushing and filling the hole that Bushrod left behind.
Meanwhile, in a rival city nearby, the Atlanta Falcons released another significant player from their roster, OT Tyson Clabo. The 6-foot-6, 329-pound beast hasn’t missed not one game for the Falcons since 2007. Clabo is entering into his ninth season and he has proven to be durable, reliable and big, which is right up the Saints’ alley.
Clabo overcame a slow start to regain his spot as the star of Atlanta’s offensive line by the end of the season. He gave up five sacks in the first four games of the 2012-2013 season, but he didn’t give up not a single one for the rest of the season.
Although Clabo is three years older than Bushrod, he is still relatively in his prime and more than capable of protecting Drew Brees‘ blindside. He can also get into the second layer of the defense to block for running backs, which is what Payton enjoys to do. According to ProFootball Talk, the Dallas Cowboys and the Jacksonville Jaguars have reached out to Clabo, but I believe the Saints should be the third team.
If we look at the personnel the Saints have right now as offensive tackle, all have potential but none are proven. Offensive tackles Charles Brown and Marcel Jones both have battled injuries since being drafted, and the New Orleans Saints’ free agency pick up, Jason Smith, is viewed to some as a bust. Brees can only operate with a solid offensive line and they need consistent, durable and reliable players up front.
Jermon Bushrod was a huge loss for the team, but New Orleans can surely bounce back with a Tyson Clabo signing. The Saints’ salary cap situation is in dire straights, but Mickey Loomis is the best in the business, and I believe they should find a way to make it work.

Tyson Clabo: New Orleans Saints Should Consider Signing Him

Couldnt hurt to have the competition for the others at that position, just makes it so we get the best player starting

I know he isn't a great player, but let's not forget about Zach Strief. He has started 23 games for us over the past two seasons.

Not even an option. There is no where near the cap room required for a Clabo.

Please replace Strief...please.

It would be a smart move to consider, but we would have to free up some cap space first.

Sorry to say thats all they can do is look. No money without restructuring someone else's contract, still have to sign draft picks, very little room under the cap the last time I looked.
IMO, it's time to see if Charles Brown can do what he was drafted for and thats play tackle, preferably LT. Who knows maybe it's a breakout year for him. He did a good job last year subbing at RT until he got hurt again.

That's his problem staying healthy.

No he was talking about Clabo. Brown pretty much stays hurt. And I think Strief gets a bad rap. He was hurt last year. When he's healthy he's a decent starter.

He's garbage. A run block specialist. He always needs chip blocks and extra help.

I hear Green Bay and New England have a couple of cagey veteran QB's we could use too.

add yet another RT to the roster that by all odds will join the other RT on IR by seasons end. go for it.

10,000 RT and not one LT to be seen

still a right tackle that was released as a move because the falcons wanted to get wanted to get bigger and more athletic at tackle.

But remember this He struggled against the Saints last season. Jordan ate him up and spit him out more than once on the field. So if the saints are not calling him they have some very good reasons why.

Not excited at all by the prospect of signing Clabo; I just don't see him adding anything special to the roster and he won't be signing for vet minimum, so the Saints can't even afford him.

I wouldn't say garbage, but he certainly isn't as good as the guy lining up beside him, who's presence has probably elevated Strief's game during these past two seasons, but that's the nature of the O-line unit.

Strief battled some injuries last season, which affected his performances negatively, so he might not be as bad as f.e. last season would otherwise suggest - I'd be OK with him coming out of the off-/preseason as the starting RT, but I do hope that some other OT (Marcel Jones) beats him out during the season and becomes the future starting RT for years to come.

I've criticized Strief heavily in the past, but I do think he is serviceable and I'm more concerned with the LT position at present.

I'd be glad to see any player get beat out for a starting job including Drew Brees because that would mean we found some one better.
