-- McAllister Unhappy with One-Back Offense --
Fri Sep 17, 2004 --from FFMastermind.com

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports Saints RB Deuce McAllister has issues with the team's one-back offensive attack. McAllister has been contained since the team switched its primary base offense to the new set of personnel that uses an extra tight end instead of a fullback. He voiced his discontent to OC Mike McCarthy in a meeting Monday and re-iterated his feelings Thursday. "I'm a good back in the one-back set when I go side to side and in a change-of-pace type deal," McAllister said. "But I'm more effective when I get my shoulders moving straight, going down hill. When I can get north and south on you, then I'm at my best." New Orleans went primarily to a one-back offense, which includes an extra tight end or wide receiver instead of a fullback, after veteran lead blocker FB Terrelle Smith signed with the Cleveland Browns in March.

and here is the rest of the story:

McAllister takes issue with offense
Running back wants return to lead-blocker alignment

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS -- The lack of effectiveness of the Saints\' one-back offense has become a concern for the one back that matters: Deuce McAllister.

The two-time Pro Bowler has been stuck in neutral since the team switched its primary base offense to the new set of personnel that uses an extra tight end instead of a fullback. He voiced his discontent to offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy in a meeting Monday and re-iterated his feelings Thursday.

\"I\'m a good back in the one-back set when I go side to side and in a change-of-pace type deal,\" McAllister said. \"But I\'m more effective when I get my shoulders moving straight, going down hill. When I can get north and south on you, then I\'m at my best.\"

New Orleans went primarily to a one-back offense, which includes an extra tight end or wide receiver instead of a fullback, after veteran lead blocker Terrelle Smith signed with the Cleveland Browns in March.

The idea is to get the best personnel on the field. McCarthy said. He decided a lineup with McAllister in the backfield with tight ends Boo Williams and Ernie Conwell and receivers Donté Stallworth and Joe Horn on the perimeter would cause headaches for opposing defenses. Instead, McAllister has suffered.

He struggled in the preseason and was held to 57 yards on 16 carries by a patchwork Seattle defense Sunday. He was held to 1 yard or less on six of his 16 carries and became noticeably frustrated in the second half.

\"I couldn\'t get anything going,\" McAllister said. \"There was nothing that was positive. I got to the point where I didn\'t care. I just put my head down and ran, got a couple of yards. I was just frustrated, not really with what we were trying to do with but with the fact that we weren\'t having any success.\"

Since setting a franchise record with nine consecutive 100-yard rushing games from Week 4 to Week 12 in 2003, McAllister has gone five consecutive games without topping 100 yards. His last 100-yard game was Nov. 30, 2003, when he gained 165 yards on 30 carries in a 24-20 victory at Washington.

Saints coach Jim Haslett said Monday that McAllister didn\'t run with his usual authority against Seattle. After evaluating the tape with McCarthy on Monday, McAllister admitted he missed opportunities for big gains on a couple of cut-back runs.

\"He could have run better, and he knows that,\" McCarthy said. \"There was plenty of blame to go around.\"

Regardless, McAllister is convinced the offense needs to return to its drive-blocking, power-running ways to be effective. He said the Saints\' offensive line, which averages 317 pounds per man, is built for physical drive-blocking schemes more than finesse, athletic plays such as pulls, traps and misdirections, which are more prevalent in one-back offenses around the league.

\"I understand management and personnel may want to fall in love with the guys on the outside,\" McAllister said. \"They want to use all the speed: Boo and Ernie, and the wideouts. And it\'s no knock against them. They\'re a special group. Obviously, they help me, too.

\"But at the same time, on the inside, we\'re just not built like that. We don\'t have a lineman under 310. They\'re not the 285, Denver-type linemen. We don\'t have those type linemen. We have to take advantage of their strengths. I know the coaching staff is not going to be hard-headed or naive enough to stick with running east and west or north and south with tight ends. They\'re going to do what we do best. It\'s about wins and losses.\"

McCarthy is not ready to give up the one-back lineup after one game. He said rookie fullback Mike Karney will play more against San Francisco on Sunday. But that\'s a product of the game plan more than McAllister\'s persuasiveness.

\"What we did schematically against the Seattle Seahawks had nothing to do with the outcome of the game,\" McCarthy said. \"For anybody, internally or externally, to overreact to the performance as being a schematic problem, I\'m in disagreement with them. . . . Our problems were execution and efficiency.\"

Still, McCarthy said, he respects McAllister\'s opinion enough to adjust his play-calling to appease his star runner.

\"We\'ve got to make sure that we\'re all on the same page,\" said McCarthy, who has had a 1,000-yard runner in each of his four seasons as offensive coordinator in New Orleans. \"If he perceives it that way, then that\'s the most important thing. That will always be taken into account. That will always be a priority.

\"I\'m the one putting in the plays, and he\'s the one running them. If he\'s not comfortable, then it doesn\'t make any sense for me to be putting those plays in.\"
