B&G.com Exclusive Interview: QB Coach for Ryan Griffin

In an exclusive interview with BlackAndGold.com, Tulane University football Quarterback Coach Mike Neu makes the case for undrafted free agent (UDFA) Ryan Griffin having a shot at making the Saints’ roster.

BlackAndGold.com: Coach, we know that your time is precious this time of year with recruiting and everything else, so we really appreciate your taking the time to speak with us.

Coach Neu: You’re welcome; it’s my pleasure.

BlackAndGold.com: Coach Neu, when I spoke briefly with your Media Relations office, we were told that you are a former coach of the New Orleans Voodoo. I guess you know this area quite well.

Coach Neu: Yes, I am very familiar with Mr. Benson (owner of the Voodoo), and have a good working relationship with him and many on the Saints’ staff. The Voodoo facilities and Superdome are all fields that I’m acquainted with. I have also gotten to know Head Coach Sean Payton quite well since he arrived in New Orleans (after Hurricane Katrina). We have all have a great working relationship with Mr. Benson and the Saints organization since we arrived.

BlackAndGold.com: Is Ryan Griffin from the Louisiana area, and was he recruited by the Green Wave?

Coach Neu: No, Ryan is from Southern California within an hour of Los Angeles (I recall his hometown to be Westlake Village). He was recruited by the former Tulane staff; I have only been with the Green Wave for the past season after coming onboard with Head Coach Curtis Johnson.

BlackAndGold.com: What stands out about Ryan Griffin as a player on the field?

Coach Neu: Number one is his desire to succeed. He’s very intelligent, and knows how to effectively manage a game on the field. He calls for the right protection, and can also buy time by moving around in the pocket. He knows where to go with the ball in all situations.

BlackAndGold.com: What stands out about Ryan Griffin as a player on the sidelines and locker room?

Coach Neu: He is understands his players and has good football instincts. On the sidelines, he knows his offense and opposing defenses. He will call younger players on the side to go into greater detail on what the team is trying to do (scheme-wise) He leads by example, and is one of the hardest workers in the weight room, studying video, and putting forth maximum effort.

BlackAndGold.com: Is there a present or past NFL player that Ryan models after or reminds you of?

Coach Neu: No, not really. He knows who he is, and operates best at being himself. He knows that this is a tremendous opportunity to play for/with two who are among the ABSOLUTE BEST in their profession:

Head Coach Sean Payton and Quarterback Drew Brees. Ryan will undoubtedly make a good impression.

BlackAndGold.com: Is there a game in Ryan’s play in 2012 (last season) that stands out as one in which he performed as a stud player?

Coach Neu: Yes. I’d have to say it was the game vs. a very good Southern Methodist (SMU) team that made a bowl appearance last year. In that game, Ryan made the big plays downfield, and made some very tough throws into tight coverage. When we had a pressure, must-have-first-down, Ryan was able to come through and make the play. He was decisive throughout the game. We eventually won that game (at home): 27-26.

BlackAndGold.com: Competition will be tight to see who backs up Drew Brees. Do you see Ryan Griffin making the Saints as a backup or practice squad?

Coach Neu: He knows it will be a challenge, but he is not afraid to work his way up. Right now he’s 4th on the Saints’ QB depth chart (as a rookie). He will make the most of his opportunities. He has played tough in the backfield all his career, and has taken his share of hits. He missed 3 full games, and half of another (this past season). Overall, he has been very reliable and durable. When everyone gets a chance to see him play, regardless of how many snaps he gets in the preseason, they will see Ryan’s best. He will do whatever it takes to help the offense move the ball down the field, and I would not be surprised if he opened a few eyes in camp. You never know how well (or poorly) a player will do when he comes to the pros; only time will tell. Some players get rattled in the backfield (as QB). But that will not be the case with Ryan. He does his homework, can anticipate what a defense will do, mixes his snap count, moves defenders with his eyes and pump fakes. He is a student of the game, and will do what it takes to maximize his chances to make the Saints’ roster. He will certainly do his part to make the Saints want to keep him.

BlackAndGold.com: Any predictions on what the Saints will do in 2013 with the return of Head Coach Sean Payton?

Coach Neu: I absolutely love the Saints! It is a first-class organization top to bottom. They will be right in the thick of things come December. And if they get into the playoffs, they will be a tough opponent for ANY OTHER NFL team. I look for them to have a huge season this year.

BlackAndGold.com: Coach Neu, we once again thank you for your time, and for providing insight for Saints fans about QB Ryan Griffin. On behalf of BlackAndGold.com and Saints fans everywhere, a big WhoDat thank you! All the best to the Green Wave this season!

Coach Neu: You’re welcome; glad to talk with you.
