New Orleans Saints Waive DE Braylon Broughton

Broughton was originally signed as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2012 season.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday that the club has waived DE Braylon Broughton.

Broughton, 6-6, 272, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2012 season from Texas Christian University where he was a three-year letterman. Broughton appeared in 40 games for the Horned Frogs, totaling 45 tackles (32 solo), 9.5 stops for a loss, three sacks, three passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and one blocked kick.

The Dallas, Texas native spent the 2012 offseason with the team before being added to the practice squad at the start of the regular season.

DE at 272 in a 3/4 would have to be a bad dude. In a 4/3 he's good.

We're under the cap and we have 90. No need to waive him unless he F'd up something big time or we're replacing him on the 90 with someone else.

Yeah, Broughton looks really good on paper and on the limited collegiate tape that's available of him, but I guess he just didn't fit into what the Saints were looking to do on defense or he f'ed up somehow like Danno suggested.

They might end up re-signing him later on... wouldn't be the first time that happened.

He put us at 90 a few days ago, we're back down to 89 now.

i do not like the move myself. i really wanted to see worked out as a 34 DE.

i am tired of cutting healthy players for players with IR issues that are also developmental. if he resurfaces else where in the nfl in the next two years as making an active roster i will be upset

He was an UDFA in 2012, scouts saw something they didn't like. Saints picked him up and gave him a year to see how he would develop. He made the practice squad last year so they have seen a fair bit of him on the practice field.

Logical assumption is that he did not develop as expected.

The Detroit Lions have been active on the waiver wire this off-season, and they added another player to their roster via that method Tuesday.

The Lions claimed defensive end Braylon Broughton off waivers from the New Orleans Saints.

Broughton spent last year on the Saints’ practice squad, after going undrafted out of TCU. He took a predraft visit to the Lions last spring.

Broughton will compete for a backup job and potentially a practice-squad spot with the Lions. Jason Jones, Willie Young, Ronnell Lewis and rookies Ziggy Ansah, Devin Taylor and Freddie Bishop are the other defensive ends on the roster.

Bishop also has practice-squad eligibility.

Earlier this off-season, the Lions added linebacker Cory Greenwood, defensive back De’Quan Menzie and offensive guard Derek Hardman off waivers.

he did not clear waivers lmao the saints i fear screwed the pooch here. I can look at the roster and come up with 5 players right off the bat i would have cut before him.

Scouts some where else see some thing worth working on enough to make wavier claims.
