METAIRIE, La. — Saints new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan believes he’s in his best situation as a defensive coordinator since coached as an assistant with the New England Patriots, where he won two Super Bowls under Bill Belichick.

“I just feel like a sense of urgency,” Ryan said Thursday, his first time speaking with media since being hired in February. “I can’t wait to give everything I have to this organization. I know everybody is on the same path.

“That big sign that used to be up there – ‘Do Your Job’ – I’ve heard those words before. I plan on doing it.”

Ryan was fired following two years in Dallas after the Cowboys missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons. His defense finished No. 19 in the NFL in 2012.

His marriage with New Orleans came after newly-reinstated coach Sean Payton let go of Steve Spagnuolo after one season, one in which the Saints set an NFL record for most yards allowed.

Ryan thinks both his firing and last year’s debacle on defense will serve the Saints well in 2013.

“These guys have been well-coached before,” Ryan said. “They’re smart. They’re just ready to win. I think we all have a chip on our shoulder after last season. I don’t like getting fired. I know I had a job in five minutes so it was no big deal. I know I got my feelings hurt and so did our players. We’re looking to do something about it.”

Thursday marked the Saints’ third of a possible 15 organized team activities and immediately changes were obvious.

From Will Smith lining up at outside linebacker to cornerback Jabari Greer working with the backups from Keenan Lewis being with the first team at left cornerback from things as simple of fumble pickup drills, New Orleans’ defense will look different.

Ryan has been impressed with how quickly the players have picked up on what’s going on.

“I’ve got to push these guys mentally to the limit, see what they can and can’t do,” he said. “And I’ve been so impressed by these guys. I haven’t taken over a defense like that – this is my 10th year coordinating in this league – one that’s picked up things as fast as these guys have on the board.”

He sure likes to throw around that "five minutes" ... Hopefully his defense only allows a total of five minutes of playing time per game to the opponent's offense.

Yeah if the O plays up to previous years a middle of the pack defence will get us to the promised land.

IDK, I think he's got all the swagger/attitude of the defensive coordinator the Saints had when last winning the SB ... without all the baggage, :mrgreen:.

NO ONE will expect our defense to do ANYTHING this year. They have the opportunity to blindside some teams with strong play. Seriously, no teams are doing preseason preparations for a strong defense out of this team.

Perfect situation for a smash mouth, in your face, turn around on defense. If we produce only the 19th ranked defense in the league we could go to and win the Superbowl with the talent we have!

Me either. I have no problem with my DC being cocky and arrogant as long as he backs it up with results.

Now if he can't produce results, then he just looks foolish.

yep we won it all with a 25th ranked defense the key on defense was the timing of the turnovers they created not the amount

2009 we ranked 3rd with 11

2010 we ranked 13th with -6

so win the turn over game is big but the ability for a defense to generate turn over late in the game when the game is on the line is the key.

that is an area i hope the saints have picked up the right player some where some how. i do not see that player on our defense right now. the player that has the knack to be in the right place at the right time when it counts.

the sharper effect. yes it is contagious but you need the the infection first in order for it to spread
