Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
1 Attachment(s)
At this stage of Courtney Roby’s career with the New Orleans Saints, his job description probably needs to be rewritten.
On paper, he is listed as a wide receiver/kick returner. And while he performs both duties well when pressed into action, his real value comes as the unquestioned captain for special teams coordinator Greg McMahon. Arguably, no one does it better than Roby, which is why the Saints re-signed him to a one-year, $905,000 contract in March. “I had visits set up in free agency,’’ said Roby, a third-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2005 out of Indiana University. “I talked to different teams personally, and my agent was talking to teams as well. But once I was able to get everything squared away with New Orleans, once we reached common ground, it was definitely the place I wanted to be. “When I sat back and evaluated everything, it was a no-brainer for me. I feel like we have a lot of unfinished business here. It’s a great organization, a great team, and when you have all those kinds of things, you really don’t want to leave that.’’ Roby, 30, likely will enter this season as he has the past few years in New Orleans — on the proverbial bubble, fighting for a roster spot. Although no depth chart is etched in stone on the eve of minicamp, which runs Tuesday through Thursday, Roby probably is viewed as the team’s sixth wide receiver, behind veterans Marques Colston and Lance Moore, 2012 phenom Joe Morgan, unproven Nick Toon and fifth-round pick Kenny Stills. Roby’s best season as a receiver came during his rookie year with the Titans in 2005, when he caught 21 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown. Since joining the Saints at midseason in ’08, Roby has two catches for 15 yards. In the return game, running backs Darren Sproles (punts) and Travaris Cadet (kickoffs) top the depth chart, though Roby has proved to be an effective kick returner. He averaged 27.5 yards and scored a touchdown during the Super Bowl XLIV season of 2009. “Every year there’s a line in the story about me being on the bubble or whatever, but I don’t pay attention to that,’’ Roby said. “I leave that up to (the media) to speculate on that stuff. I just focus in on my job and do whatever I’m coached to do and whatever the team needs me to do. I take great pride in that. I just go out there, play hard, be reliable and take it one day at a time, year after year.’’ Read more: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints | Saints | The Advocate — Baton Rouge, LA |
Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
One thing I can never understand is that every preseason Roby steps up at WR, catches everything thrown his way and we have never even given him a shot at the 4th WR spot
I mean adrian arrington did absolutely nothing for 3 years and still got the start over Roby at WR He's easily our best and most consistent Special teams player, probably tied with Morestud! |
Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
i leave all those decisions to the coaches. i trust their judgement.
what ever they decide upon is fine with me. |
Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
To my recollection Arrington has had some great preseasons. I doubt Roby makes the team. Too many wr.

Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
What does Arrington have to do with anything?

Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
I probably should have quoted billy. It was directed towards Arrington having anything to do with Roby not making the team reference. But I see it wasn't a direct response from the article but the comment you made.
My mistake. |

Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
I love this guy. Such a huge heart. Whatever you ask him to do, he does it. There have been many preseason games where after the starters come out, and Chase came in, he would be the only one out there catching ANYTHING. Every year he kicks and claws and fights his way out of the bubble and onto the team, because he wants to be there.
I remember one preseason game against the 49ers, where the whole family of one of the 49er players was sitting next to me, cheering for their son/brother/boyfriend/cousin etc. Their guy was a 2nd stringer in the 49er defensive secondary, on the bubble, he came in during the 2nd quarter, I don't remember his name. But they're like, cheering for their guy, and one dude in the family goes, "they're throwing away from him, they don't like that side! He's got it locked down!". And I'm like, I don't know about that, pal, that guy Roby is pretty good, so is Chase, I wouldn't get too excited yet if I were you..... And sure enough, Chase was pulling a Drew move, and lulling the guy to sleep, throwing away from him, moving him off his position like a chess piece, THEN he throws to Roby like four or five plays straight in a row, and completely torches the dude. It was only second string preseason but one of the greatest smack talking moments I've ever had in the stands. |

That was cool. |
Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
Roby is still on the bubble this year.......although I do believe that he makes it again this year.
|
Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
He makes it every year due to special teams play.
|
Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
Maybe this is the year he shines. He has never been much of a WR, but who knows?
|
Re: Something special brought Courtney Roby back to Saints
I don't care if he is "on the bubble" for the rest of his career, Roby is a huge part of our success at a very low-glory position, and his ROI on 900k is ridiculous. I have seen multiple plays a game where Roby single handedly sticks a returner for 5-10 yards less than he would have gotten without him there.
