Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
1 Attachment(s)
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is easily the most indispensible player on the team's roster.
But trying to find the most essential player on the other side of the ball may not be so easy. The Saints are coming off a season in which the defense yielded the most yards in NFL history, so no player truly shined. However, this offseason the Saints have tried to revamp their defense, bringing in a new defensive coordinator (Rob Ryan), switching to a 3-4 scheme and signing free agents Keenan Lewis and Victor Butler and drafting Kenny Vaccaro. Those new players will be asked to mix with holdovers like Curtis Lofton, Jabari Greer, Jonathan Vilma, Cameron Jordan, Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins. But the question remains: Who is the most indispensable defensive player on the Saints' roster? Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player? | NOLA.com I thought this was a really interesting question and I'm curious what everyone has to say. I'd vote no one. No one has proven on our roster to be a game breaker as of yet. There's certainly some interesting young talent here, but as of now, I don't see anyone as being indispensable or irreplaceable. Hopefully Cam Jordan can eventually become that type of guy... but not now, not yet. |

I believe we're seeing Jordan's best now; I think Big John Jenkins, Kenny Vacarro, and Chase Thomas really will bring something to the defense... Right now we've got a committment to Curtis Lofton, but I also look forward to a bright Saints future for Kevin Reddick... |
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
The DC.

Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
I'm going to go with Roman Harper, because he is the only one that we actually lose cap space if we cut.
|
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
From what I saw last season Cameron Jordan he was pretty much the only player on defence that improved last year.
|
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
The closest we have to indispensable on defense is Morestead, the punter.
|
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
Cam Jordan would be my pick at the minute
I wouldn't be upset if Vaccarro turns into that guy over the next couple seasons though |
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
There's only one indespensible player on the team and he's on offense :)
|
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
There isn't...
After last year everyone is replaceable. Just can't field an entirely new defense. |

Lofton. Until someone plays better on D this year and proves otherwise.

Hate to make the second post right after but....
I remember people myself included saying and thinking Spags was the answer. Just to early to tell |
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
NT Jenkins or DE Hicks will be the indispensable man or Defense.
|
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
Vilma.......because Lofton doesn't make the call at the line.

THAT person has yet to be determined. |
Re: Who is the New Orleans Saints' most indispensable defensive player?
When you have about the same level of talent among your top defensive players, there isn't anyone who is indespensible.
We don't have that young Ray Lewis or Brian Urlacher type difference maker on our roster, but neither does anyone else. I'm not sure any team today has a truly "indespensible" player. Maybe Patrick Willis or JJ Watt? I'd say the player I'd hate to lose the most is probably Jordan, but he's hardly indespensible. |

Chiefs weren't the same when Jared Allen left, and I'm not sure the Vikings are that good a team without Allen to whom he was traded... Definitely Patrick Willis for the 49ers, though Navorro Bowman is making a name for himself... Packers defense would definitely take a hit without Clay Matthews... Not sure the Bills defense, which wasn't all that bad when the offense wasn't turning the ball over in the red zone, will be that good with Nick Barnett whose now a FA... Ray Lewis is overrated - I said it; he's one of the best LBers, but he wasn't what really made that D go; Haloti Ngata was the man and when he was injured this year, it showed... And the Lions defense isn't as, well, nasty without Ndamukong Suh manning the interior; even though their secondary has been no better/worse than ours... And the Rams aren't the same defense without James Laurinaitis... We haven't had THAT GUY - maybe one emerges from the acquisitions... |

Any one of the starting 3 defensive lineman, Jordan/Bunkley/Hicks. At this point I would assume Johnson/Jenkins/Coleman are the backups, and I think they're all well suited for rotational roles but not sure any of them could be counted on as a long-term starter.
