New Orleans Saints WR Joe Morgan on his DWI arrest: 'I made a mistake for sure'

1 Attachment(s)
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Joe Morgan was contrite speaking to the media for the first time Thursday after being arrested nearly two weeks ago for DWI and driving without a valid license.

"I made a mistake for sure," Morgan said after the Saints final minicamp practice. "As a man I can say that. It was something that was truly a mistake. The good thing about it is that I didn't get hurt and nobody else got hurt. That was a God given thing. God is teaching me a listen. I'm learning. I learned the hard way, but it's good that I actually learned that lesson."

Saints Coach Sean Payton said after Thursday's practice he feels Morgan could be the team's No. 3 receiver and the deep threat in the passing game in 2013. So Morgan's spot on the roster regardless of the arrest seems pretty secure. Morgan admitted, though, he put himself in jeopardy by being arrested.

"Of course that's something you have to think about," Morgan said. "That's my job. If you did something in your job, you would be concerned if it was your job. That was something in the back of my mind, but once I sat down and talked to Coach Payton, it was something that we could handle."

Morgan wouldn't go into details about what was said in his meeting with Payton, but said "it wasn't all hugs and kisses" from his teammates after he return to the team from his arrest. He said there were some "lashes" from his teammates and they were treating him as if they were his big brothers. But overall, Morgan said he feels the support from his teammates through his legal troubles.

"One of the good things about this team, is that it's not like guys don't care about you at all," Morgan said. "They actually look at you like family. I call a lot of the guys around here my brother. When they found out the situation, everyone was calling to say 'Joe, are you OK?' They were making sure my well being was taken care of first besides the football aspect of it. I love that part of the New Orleans Saints, that it's a family atmosphere."

It's the same type of message Drew Brees gave to Morgan last week when the arrest occurred.

"He's got a great (meeting) room that he's in there with guys like Lance Moore and Marques Colston, guys who have been around a long time and done things the right way and true pros," Brees said. "What you find is leaders is pull him under their wing and give them the best advice they can. But in the end, there's consequences to actions and you pay your debt and you move on. And hopefully you're better for it."

Good. Give him the grief he deserves.

Joe seems to lack a little mental maturity.

There are no "good things" that come from a DUI. There are just varying degrees of tragedy and lessons learned.
Nothing positive came from it Joe, you just escaped some of the huge negatives.

What is he 20!!!!!! You can't tell me at 20 you had a mature hold on life...... things happen..... It was stupid yes but to me unless he does it again or is a repeat offender its Water under the bridge..... He seems mature enough to own up to the fact that what he did was wrong and is saying all the right things..... Let's cut him some slack. I have never recieved a DUI of any kind..... but not because I've never been in that situation!!!!

If I was making even the NFL minimum - I'd have a cabbie driving me in this city...

Hell, how many cab drivers would have driven a Saint home drunk just because he was a Saint?!?

Though if he were dezzing, I could see giving him a pass...

As bad as this incident appears, it could have been worse. Just ask current Cowgirl player Josh Brent.

Luckily Joe is ok, no one was harmed, injured or KILLED.

I disagree. Anyone with half a brain straightens up after a DUI. The state makes it hurt. Jail, fines, MADD meetings, community service, loss of driving privileges, etc.

Good things certainly come from bad things. Usually, a person will consider what could have happened and realize that as stupid as they behaved, it can always be worse.
