New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
Sedrick Ellis was a Bear for just a matter of hours on Wednesday but the veteran defensive tackle already knew the 2013 schedule for his new team. One game, at least.
“I think you know which game I’m excited about,” Ellis said, laughing. The “which game” is the Oct. 6 game in Soldier Field against the New Orleans Saints, the team that made Ellis the No. 7-overall pick of the 2008 draft. Ellis had a few good years with the Saints before changes in the coaching staff produced changes in the defensive schemes, which were accelerating this year as New Orleans switches to a 3-4 scheme. That was enough for Ellis, who had visits with the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots (two 4-3 teams) but opted for a one-year deal in Chicago with the Bears’ one-gap attacking scheme. “That was part of the reason I picked Chicago,” Ellis said. “Mainly it was because of the way I know their defensive line plays. They allow their guys to do what defensive linemen are supposed to do, and that’s rush the passer, gets sacks and put pressure on the quarterback while playing the run on the way. I haven’t had the chance to do that the last couple of years.” The plan is to play Ellis, 6-1, 307 pounds, at the “three-technique,” although Ellis has played and is willing to work at nose tackle. Henry Melton is the starting three-technique; Stephen Paea is the No. 1 at nose tackle. Ellis projects to be their backup in a three-tackle rotation. “He’s veteran player, he’s got versatility,” said defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. “We feel like he can give us some stoutness inside, and also give us some rush inside. He’ll have an opportunity to come here and prove what he can do, and compete. That’s what we’re looking for.” Players are rarely given to predictions. Ellis was not giving a specific number for sacks, tackles or anything else. But he was almost offering a guarantee that his production will increase as a Bear. “Definitely,” he declared. “In fact I’m almost guaranteeing that it will because this is the style of defense that caters to defensive linemen getting up the field and playing fast, which is what I got drafted for in ’08 and the last couple years I haven’t been able to do that as much. Now I’ll have my chance.” New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee | CSN Chicago |

Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
This guy is talking out of his a$$. I'm looking forward to the Bears game too because it'll be another one that we won't have to worry one bit about playing good defensive tackles.

Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
If he's right I'll tip my hat to him and acknowledge we didn't put him in the best position to use his strengths.
But I don't think he's right... |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
I'm having trouble understanding all of his excuses.
Hasn't he been playing the 3 technique all these years and asked to rush the passer while playing the run? That's pretty damn generic for all 4-3 3 technique tackles. You can't even begin to tell me that he wasn't allowed to do those things especially with Greg Williams. All we did was try to attack... with everyone. You sucked... man up and just admit it. Stop making lame ass excuses. It's sad that it takes playing against his former team to get all motivated. Not even a contract year could do that. I feel ashamed to have been open to the idea of bringing this finger pointing, excuses making, underachiever back to our team. |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
It's funny how he says he "picked" the Bears. I'm almost willing to bet they were the only team who offered him a contract. And as for his belief that he'll have a big year... He said that before every season with us, and it never came close to happening. Now he acts as if the Saints wronged him, when it is he who failed the Saints.
Go ahead and circle that game, Ellis. Nobody cares. |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
I know where we're running that day.
|
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
Never lived up to what he was suppose to have been... all hype.
|
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
LOL. Evans and Grubbs are going to put his butt on the ground all day. What a pathetic bunch of excuses.
|
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
I seem to remember even third tier running backs running right through him almost every play.... And don't get me started on goal line stands.... Have a good time in Chicago Sed... The good news is you've got Bushrod there to console you....

If he said he was done wrong last year I will give him that but that is the only year he can use that excuse.

Pffffft! Wooow. I'm sure Drew is shaking in his cleats right now. Rrrriiiiiigghht.

Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
Ellis definitely lost some points in my mind for some of those comments.
Now, I do understand that new additions to a team do these type of puff pieces all the time (see all NOLA articles on Saints' additions), but Ellis seems to have a tendency to blame everyone else for his shortcomings than himself. After the work stoppage, Ellis said that he was going to have a breakthrough year with both Rogers and Franklin eating up most of the double teams, which would allow him to purely rush the passer. What happened? Nothing really, he continued to be average at best in creating QB pressure, and don't get me started on his run defense. Then GW was replaced by Spags and Ellis said in an interview that it was exciting for the D-linemen to make the change because GW's front 4 schemes were supposedly the most complex in the whole of NFL, which in turn handcuffed the D-lineman in what they could do in terms of rushing the passer. Ellis was supposed to be heading for a career year on his contract year with everything on the line and the new addition Bunkley lining up beside him to take up double teams. What happened? Absolutely nothing... well, that's wrong, there was a change but unfortunately for Ellis; it was for the worse. He was absolute rubbish once again and late in the season when he was lined up next to Tom Johnson - a guy they signed from the CFL and plays under a $800K contract - Ellis was the one getting the single treatment, but was still constantly losing those battles with the O-linemen. So, to me it all sounds like hot air and I couldn't care less where he plays or if the Saints are going to be facing that team. I'm not going to be following his career as I do with many of the other former Saints' players after they've moved on to other teams - mainly because I don't think Ellis will have a career in the NFL going forward. I hardly think that he was turning suitors away this offseason, and had the Saints offered him a contract, he would've jumped at the chance to re-sign. He'll be riding the pine this whole season with the Bears unless they face multiple injuries to their DT corps. Good riddance Sedrick! |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
he signed a 1 year deal with tha bears sure, because they couldn't give him a 3 month or shorter deal like they only wanted to see. later ellis u were so -so here and doe- doe at best.

'They allow their guys to do what defensive linemen are supposed to do, and that’s rush the passer, gets sacks and put pressure on the quarterback'
The Saints let their d-lineman do that as well, you were just so ****ing bad at it that there was no way we any team would give you more than a 1 year, low cost contract. ****ing plug. |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
The date(s) he needs to worry about circling is/are the NFL Roster Cut Down Dates...
|
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
Ellis - Our D line automatically improved when Tom Johnson ( an UDFA and CFL player) came in and replaced you, our O line is going to destroy you

You're right, because you did NONE of that the last couple of years. What's the difference between Sedrick Ellis and a sack of flour? The flour has a friggen' sack! |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
Yes, I'm real worried about a backup DT that the Saints thought so highly of that they released him. He wasn't good enough to make the Saints two deep. He better worry about seeing the field first and doing anything on it worth getting his pay later. I've watched this guy get stampeded by every no name RB in the NFL for years. The last time he got near a QB was in the shower some years ago. Now I'm supposed to fear him? I hope he plays the entire Saints/Bears game. That will give our offense a big advantage that they don't even need.

Gravity has a hold of him and he's pretty much stuck in one spot.

Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
In related news,
I am sure the New Orleans Saints O-line and RB Mark Ingram and Pierre Thomas have circled the Bears game as well. Inigo Montoya: There will be blood tonight! |

Yes you have. You just suck at it. |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
Tough crowd!
Just like almost any other Saints player, I appreciate that Ellis was a Saints player. I continued to pull for him every year expecting him to become what we figured he'd become. And honestly, what's he supposed to say when he's being interviewed? I think that he said what many of us would say if we were in his shoes. |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
He can circle this game on his calendar until his marker runs out of ink, he's not gonna do crap.
|
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
“I think you know which game I’m excited about,” Ellis said, laughing. Nope what game is that. You never played before, why do you think your going show up now.

Just as Long as Drew doesn't wear a big Twinkie on his helmet Sedric will do exactly as he did with the Saints," Abosuletly Nothing" but make our offense better if he makes the cut doubt it.
Big Fat Plug, the only thing he's good at is licking his nuts like an old dog. I always thought he was a big mistake the Saints made considering the money he made and the production he gave. |
Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
I never saw a 307 lb anything that was so easy to push around. At the first bit of contact he was immediately 3 yards off the line of scrimmage..

Re: New Bear Ellis circles Saints game, issues (almost) guarantee
The entire Saints organization as well as the city of New Orleans need to circle that date. I remember the total lack of class the "fans" of Chicago demonstrated during the NFC Championship game. THEY ALL SUCK!! It's time for Karma to pay them a much deserved visit!!
