Butler’s impact with the Saints has been minimized, now that he’s expected to miss most — if not all — of the 2013 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered at Tuesday’s OTA practice.

His on-field responsibilities will likely be inherited by Junior Galette and Martez Wilson, returning contributors that were seeking bigger roles. Less heralded options include undrafted rookie Chase Thomas and sixth-round pick Rufus Johnson.

Galette and Wilson played defensive end in last season’s horrid 4-3 defense and are transitioning to the new role, which includes playing with their heads up in a two-point stance and in pass coverage. Both will earn playing time as the Saints rotate fresh defensive players.

What I disagree with in this article is Galette and Wilson weren't exactly the problem last year with the Saints "horrid 4-3 defense".

No Saints player knows Rob Ryan’s 3-4 scheme better than outside linebacker Victor Butler, who this offseason followed his defensive coordinator from Dallas to New Orleans.

that sums it up in my book. saints played under the wackiest DC in the NFL for years so there aint much RR can throw at them they can not handle. as long as it is not to conservative like last year.

Enough of this RR crap. the team can handle it

You are correct. This "read and react" crap is for the birds. Attack! Attack! The D will give up some big plays doing it, but they will likely make more big plays via turnovers than they would sitting back.

If indeed Butler is out for the whole season and he knows RR's D that well, expect him to be asked to help teach Wilson and Galette the scheme

i still say there aint much to teach with our guys. terminology for the same thing they have already done should not be so bad.

Butler will be missed because i had him ready for a break out year. pro bowl nah but becoming a solid starter in the NFL sure.

Wilson i feel better about than Gallette. Wilson is a true LB who has a more complete game. Gillette has more questions mark about his entire game. Run D and pass D worries me
