Jordan shows growth

The first time I saw Cameron Jordan play football at the University of California he instantly reminded me of former New Orleans Saints defensive lineman Wayne Martin.

Like Martin, Jordan had the size and athletic ability to play end in both a 4-3 or a 3-4 alignment or play defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme.

Jordan is now adjusting to another scheme under first-year defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, but he has played in a similar defensive at Cal.

“I have played across the board in both college and pro football, but as a senior I played in a similar defense under Clancy Pendergast at California,” Jordan said. “Clancy has coached in the NFL for a long time and he liked using different alignments and giving offenses a different look from play to play. This defense is similar in the aggressive approach and also shuffling personnel to give quarterbacks different looks. Right now it is just getting not only the physical reps, but the mental reps in. You have to fully know what you do on each play, understand your gap responsibilities and adjust to the versatility this system brings. You have to do that now and not during the season. You just can’t get the reps in during the year at practice, so this is why in all this heat and humidity you make it worth your while to understand what you are doing from play to play.

“I like what Rob Ryan has brought to the table. He understands this game thoroughly and we are an up-tempo defense. We are going to make mistakes, but it will not be because of effort. Our goal is to be a top run defending club and then get as much pressure on the quarterback as we can with whatever alignment of players we can.”

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

All little common sense goes a long way.
