John DeShazier: Nick Toon getting rave reviews this training camp

Overwhelmingly, the reviews have been positive and virtually have parroted one another.

Nick Toon is different, they say.

Nick Toon is significantly improved, they echo.

Nick Toon is ready to contribute to the New Orleans Saints as a receiver because the 6-foot-4, 218-pounder with the good hands and smooth moves has been a breakout, look-at-me player in training camp, fully recovered from a foot injury that got him placed on injured reserve last year and forced him to miss his entire rookie season.

“Nick’s getting better,” cornerback Jabari Greer said Wednesday. “He had one move earlier today that really surprised me. He’s been getting off the line well, his suddenness in and out of breaks has been good, he’s been catching the ball well.

“He’s a guy that’s humble in character and willing to put his head down and work every day. He really embodies the type of receiver that we bring in, a guy that’s going to be where he’s supposed to be, that’s going to work hard and going to really be team first. I think we’re lucky to have Nick. I’m excited to see him play because I’m a big fan of Nick Toon in the locker room.”

Being a presence in the locker room is fine, but Toon obviously wants to be one on the field, too. And after a lost rookie season – he appeared in two preseason games and caught two passes for six yards before suffering the foot injury that caused his season to end before it really began – he’s champing at the chance to cash in on his opportunity.

He’s determined to make a name for himself.

Good, we need a couple of these young recievers to step up. Our guys are awesome, but they arent getting any younger. Colston has been banged up over the past couple of seasons too so its nice to see there are some prospects waiting in the wings.

Nick Toon continues to impress: Mike Triplett's first take from Thursday's New Orleans Saints practice

Second-year receiver Nick Toon continued to "flash" during the New Orleans Saints' practice Thursday. He made a terrific catch in the corner of the end zone during 7-on-7 passing drills, going up high to snag the ball then hanging on and keeping his feet in bounds as he was being shoved to the sideline.

Toon (6 feet 4, 218 pounds) has stood out to me more than any young receiver in Saints camp this summer. He passes the eyeball test as a big, physical target in the mold of Marques Colston and Jimmy Graham. He has great hands and run smooth routes.

Quarterback Drew Brees said Thursday that he thought Toon looked a little rusty during OTAs, when he returned to practice for the first time since spending last year on injured reserve because of foot surgery.

"But, man, ever since coming into training camp, the light bulb is coming on," Brees said of Toon.

Would it surprise anyone if it's Colson and Toon on the outside with Moore in the slot? The hype-o-meter is getting very high on him.

Especially at 6'4".
He "should" make a few grabs just because he's longer than most cover guys.
Brees can definitely get the ball in the right spot.
I'm ready to see if his arms are still long in traffic.
