Saints new WR...Patrick Crayton #86

New #Saints WR Patrick Crayton is 34, didn't play in regular season last year. But he was a longtime valuable backup receiver/punt returner for Cowboys - including first two years with Sean Payton in 2004-2005. Usually 500-600 yards per year in Dallas. Had two punt return TDs in 2009. Then spent 2010-2011 with San Diego (combined for 51 catches, 762 yards, 2 TDs in two years with Chargers).

Sean Payton is definitely back, he reminds me of a candy addict in the candy store, piling up the candy on the counter by the cash register...then at the last minute he grabs some more M&M's and throws them on top of the stack, while they ring him up. It's NEVER enough. The guy is addicted to offensive toys, no question about it!

Re: Saints new WR...Patrick Crayton #86

He needs to stick his toys on a separate field with a 4th string QB and not take reps away from his present projects.

I have noticed Sean is bringing in WR/ players.... WR/PR, WR/KR... Ive a feeling we will end up with the presently assumed starting WR corps... but have ST stacked with viable WRs. WR's have the speed and hands for special teams, thus keeping our WR corps healthy but having backups in the trunk if needed.

I don't think we need another WR. What do we do with Roby. Preston did great. Tanner did great. Toon did a good job. Colston and Moore...we know the story. Stills...meh (he better catch those bombs from now on). At least he's fast. Bring in more LBs or DBs because that's what we really need.

why do we keep robbing the cowgirls? Has there been that much unrealized talent?

Considering the HC and owner... Possibly.

Probably because we want 2 or 3 veteran guys on speed dial that are familiar with our system and can play special teams.

Sean is just doing a favor to a former player. Crayton is not going to come close to making this team, BUT if he plays OK then maybe some other team in need of a WR will take a look at him after final cuts. I can just about guarantee that's all this is.

And maybe to give Vaccaro somebody else to tee off on during practice, without losing another starter.

Very good point. Nothing like bringing in a ST player that already knows the system.

How about a ST player who can tackle for less than a 20 yard gain?

Don't forget that nutjob of a GM they have over there, too.

This is very worrisome. This isn't like signing TO. Crayton didn't do crap in Dallas. Why on earth with all our receivers are we getting another has been like Breaston???

Doesn't hurt to take a look; it's not like they have made the final 53 yet

Re: Saints new WR...Patrick Crayton #86

Makes sense when you think about it...

Look...

You're trying out four quarterbacks, well three, and with the WR's they aren't all named Colston...

So you try to get the rest of the wide receiver group as close in level of talent so that you're comparing "apples to apples"...

...if the No. 2 QB is throwing to the No. 2 WR, and so on, then you don't know if the No. 4 really is the No. 4 because he only has the No. 7-8 WRs...

...this way you're throwing to experienced guys and you get a better sense of how your QB's really are...

...plus you've got more experience around the younger receivers...

...hey, there's reasons why Payton has had the best offense in the land these past few years...

They might be a resume enhancement if you ran as a democrat.

Perhaps you can trojan horse their agenda for us?

BTTT: I think Payton is loading up on receivers because all of our WR's have a history of being frequently injured. Its wise to have 2 or 3 sitting around waiting for a call if one of our guys goes down for a few weeks.

I'm relieved that we didn't go after an OLB recently. It shows me the Galette and Wilson injuries are probably very minor.

Re: Saints new WR...Patrick Crayton #86

I think it's a very "Year One" type of move. It shows you that nothing is set in stone, and Payton is NOT content to just roll with whatever we have been doing in the past. Payton said he was going to approach this year like it was 2006 all over again.

Also, any of these veteran guys could get cut and then come back off the couch later, if we get into a disastrous Ladell Betts/Julius Jones type of situation like we did with RB's in 2010. If God forbid we need a receiver in November, any of these guys will at least know some of the terminology and have a familiarity with the team and its coaching staff etc. So it can't hurt.

The most frustrating part to me of watching Ladell Betts wasn't that he was not our first string running back, which was bad enough; it was those plays where Drew would call the play in the huddle, then they'd break, then Drew would lean in to Bett's ear and translate the play to him in English, and point and show him where to line up, after the huddle. Having all these veteran receivers in camp might help with that type of stuff later, if the Doomsday scenario ever comes to pass.

Which is a good call on Paytons part to do a little do-over... Watching from the couch gave him the same perspective we have... The ability to guess not only what type of play is going to be run but who and where...

Re: Saints new WR...Patrick Crayton #86

Crayton was brought in because the Saints are not very deep at WR this year. Yes, there are some very good young prospects like Toon, Stills, and Tanner, but they are just that, prospects. After you get past starters Moore and Colston, there really isn't all that much to get excited about just yet.

With Morgan going down for the year, it is almost a sure bet that at least one of these cast offs, Breaston, Crayton, or Parker, will make it.

I think we're deeper than we were last year. So far Toon, Stills and Tanner all look as good or better than Joe Morgan did last year at this time. And before he got dinged up Fayson was also tearing it up.

I do think Parker makes it though, if he's proven to Sean he can stay clean and sober.

Proven is the key word.
