I see a major, MAJOR problem with the 2013 New Orleans Saints

Call me a Debbie Downer, but here goes....I see a HUGE potential problem for this team on the horizon.

I worry that the awesomeness of the 2013 Saints team is too awesome for their physical human bodies to contain, and that the collective awesomeness of players, coaches and fans will explode out of all our bodies, leaving the state of Louisiana with almost no population remaining, very briefly before the awesomeness overwhelms the universe as we know it and totally destroys the entire space-time continuum and everything in existence.

Of course, my biggest worry would be that this happens BEFORE the Saints win the Super Bowl. That would kinda suck.

The real test is in 3 weeks when the actual season starts. But the Saints Nation is still awesome enough to explode into pure energy at any moment.

Very true and most of us know the difference between a pre-season mirage and actual on-field improvement. Its obvious to me that the talent level top to bottom is better than any season under Payton, even the 2009 squad with Sharper in center field. And that goes for both sides of the ball. Special teams coverage looks worse than ever but I think we'll get by.

No one is suggesting we're the 2000 Ravens, but its clear to me that we're much improved on defense.

Next week the secondary should be tested and we'll see where we're at, unless we keep getting pressure like we have been...

I think you are on to something... But I'm not exactly sure what...

7 sacks in one game...... I don't care if its preseason, Raiders, 2007, or Thursday...

That is a lot of sacks.

Weapons :
In 2009 we had Colston, Moore, Henderson and Meachem at WR; Shockey Humphry, and Dinkens at TE; and at RB we had PT and Bush + 20 others.

2013 Colston, Moore, Toon, Stills at WR; Graham, Watson at TE; and at RB PT, Ingram, Sproles and Robinson

Our 2013 offense on paper makes the 2009 offense look weak.

Let's be real here folks.

A ten spot improvement in defensive rankings would be huge (and is probably untenable).

Yet that would still place 21 teams ahead.

Let's hold our homer horses and look at things objectively.

It is just preseason, but we are ranked 3rd in rushing defense, 6th against the pass, and 2nd(behind 49ers) in total defense. Not bad for the worse defense an history, eh? Where are the Falcons again?

And damn straight you Falcon fans would be drooling with a chance to get a DE like Cameron Jordan or a CB like Keenan Lewis...

A 10 spot improvement isn't unrealistic. It would rival the the 2011 squad we fielded, which ranked 13th in PPG with much less talent than we have now.

And even if we ranked 21st, thats probably enough for a 12-4 record and bye in the playoffs. Hell, even the worst defense in NFL history still managed beat your Falcons.:p How's that for looking at things objectively?

Perhaps those dirty bird glasses of yours are keeping you from viewing things rationally, or perhaps you're just scared?

Tell skid britches we said hello.

I'm riding the fence so far through two preseason games. I'm not getting my hopes too high, but there is no denying that the product on the field is already looking MUCH better than what we saw last year. For the most part, defensive players don't seem to be completely lost like they were last year, which only proves that the personnel is better suited for a 3-4 defense. The first team offense scored on every possession. Stills and Toon look to be solid and will make the offense even that much more explosive. I said after last week, and I'll say it again this week, I'll hold back on critiquing this team until the regular season starts. I will say this, though. If the first half of last night's game is any indication of how they are going to play in the regular season, then the NFL better be ready for a Saints revival. TESTIFY!

We went 7-9 with the worst statistical defense in the league last year. A 21st ranked D has us winning the NFC South and back in the play-offs.

Dont care if its preseason or practice. Im seeing a defense much like 2009. ATTITUDE!
We switch to a 3-4 and win a game with maybr all 4 starting linebackers out.

The "we have more talent than the '11 team!!!" party line is nice, but let's wait till a few regular season snaps pass before we anoint them.

There is a lot of parity amongst the bottom 6-10 defenses in the league. If we can improve from pitiful and inept to mediocre (which could happen just by having a stable off-season and players who fit the system they are in), then we could easily jump 8 spots, and if we have a couple of actual games like the one last friday, we could probably leap frog some of the lesser mediocre teams (like the Raiders). I don't think a 10-12 spot jump in out of the question. Looking at the league right now, I think that our D should at least be able to improve to 24-22 though. If we stay in the bottom 8 I will be pretty upset.

Anyone who is still using 2012 results to project how the 2013 defense will fare doesn't know much about football.

This year will be my 30th year to predict the Saints season.

For the 30th year in a row, I predict....

... Championship!
