As the Saints convert Will Smith from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 linebacker, his ability to make the transition hinges in many respects on his ability to play.

At least for right now, he can’t play.

Smith has gone to the locker room after suffering an apparent knee injury during Sunday’s preseason game against the Texans. The injury happened on a snap that resulted in a sack of Houston quarterback Matt Schaub by Cameron Jordan.

The 2004 first-round pick left the field on his own power and was evaluated by trainers before heading to the locker room, presumably for further examination.

They checked the knee pretty long on the field. I think if it was serious they wouldn't have let him walk to the locker room on his own.

When it happened it looked like an ankle or shin injury.

Will Smith looks really fat to me. I thought he was down at the weight he came in at his rookie season, someone has been lying or fixing the pictures of him.

That's not the body of an OLB. LOL. If Butler, Wilson and JR were healthy, he wouldn't even have a shot at making the team. As it stands, if healthy, he'll probably start against the Falcons. And at this point, I'm hoping he's healthy. The OLB talent on the Saints is not good. I hope Hawthorne can play outside where Humber can start alongside Lofton at this point. That gives the Saints 3 out of 4 decent LB's on the field at one time. Counting on much from Wilson and JR at this point early in the season just doesn't look promicing.

If we cut him real quick before we know for sure about the injury can we save like 1 million?
