Get well Mr. Smith. They have to bring in Aaron Curry for a look.

Wow, harsh comments.

Guy still had some gas in the tank and has been a solid fixture for our D. He made a pretty athletic move yesterday on an end a round before he got knocked out of the game. He was a wily vet that will be missed. Who dat nation should be a little un easy at this point. We simply do not have the personnel to overcome these injuries.

Payton is gonna have to play some ball control to keep the D off the field. Nice to have a stable of competent backs.

Some very odd comments going on in here! Not sure we could be happy losing ANY player. Also it may help a lot of people to do some research on how the cap works :)

Smith has definitely been in decline. He also has not been as quick to pick up OLB as many would have hoped. That much is obvious. But he offers experience which the young guys need. He IS good against the run. And he IS a warm body (good turn of phrase this). So this is a loss for sure, however ......

I am not as concerned as I would have been had we have lost many of the other players. I know it's weird but if someone HAD to go down, he is one of the players offering me, personally, the least concern. I think we DO have options. Yes those players are going to have to step up mighty quickly but sometimes being thrown in at the deep end is the best way.

I feel sorry for Smith but his loss has not turned a #16 defence into a #32 defence. Best of luck to him in the future.

I don't know if he was great exactly. We have D-linemen that can play the run. Humber and Lofton in the middle will help too. I think we'll be fine. We have a solid set of defensive linemen and Smith can still be a coach to the players. It's time for Gallette to bring it.

The injuries are piling up. That I don't like.

True, but at least it wasn't Keenan Lewis, Cam Jordan, and Lofton. Could have been much worse. I doubt any key players wil be in on Thursday.

Re: Will Smith out for the Season

Will Smith was one of the only good players that the Saints had on the defense over last few years. He's a great DE in the 43 and I appreciate what he did while he was here.

People forget that he'd worked all his life to get to the NFL and become successful. Many fans celebrated when he was in his prime and many now are celebrating his apparent departure.

There lies the problem, he was the starting OLB and only played on the line occasionally.

He was always under appreciated. No one forced the Saints to pony up all that money to re-sign him. He was a very good and loyal Saint.

Re: Will Smith out for the Season

Was he really under-appreciated? His production for his pay was a little bit out of kilter.

He was indeed a good and loyal Saint but not one in years to come that we will say 'Wow, remember that guy!'.

I still wanted him as part of the active squad this year so this is a disappointing blow but as I said before, not one that especially concerns me from a defensive productivity point of view this year.

Imo, yes he was... and a lot. Every since he signed his large contract, people would always harp on his production. People were so focused on him not producing on the level of his contract, they tended to forget what good he brought to the table.

Well, he's certainly not Hall of Fame material nor a waiting highlight reel.

I would have been fine either way. If he made the team, I would have been rooting for him. If he were gone, I'd wish him the best.

Totally fair comment. And let's be honest we've all, at some point, talked about him and said 'Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah .... gettin' jiggy wit' it' ..... or was it just me? :)

Apparently the cost of a player determines how good or bad they are on the field on Sundays. Its two different discussions that seem to overwhelm the B&G simpletons.

Best of Luck to Will Smith.
He worked hard, and got a well-deserved ring.
He'll always be a Saint to me.

There's no difference between you and a falcon fan.

Well I hate to see anyone get injured but I'll take anyway possible to get him off the field, get well but it was long overdue for Smith to hit the bench. Time to step up Tez and Junyah

This is an interesting comment. If my interpretation of it is correct then you are upset by people who directly link production to cost.

Of course one does not befit the other. Just because you pay a lot for a player doesn't guarantee (and that is the important bit) he is a machine. Vice versa, you pay peanuts sometimes and don't always get mediocre Production or Practice Squad standards.

Unfortunately though there is a lot more pressure to perform when you have taken on a big contract. You eat into one of the most important parts of the game which is the salary cap. In 'you' taking a huge slice of the pie, there is less to share around other able-bodied players and thus, more potential chances at great playmakers.

In more simplistic terms, if you spent a lot of money on a sports car, you would expect luxury and speed. If all the vehicle did was get you from A to B then you may as well have bought a hatchback. A big price tag doesn't guarantee you that great player but it does enforce expectation and if you do not meet the expectation then you have to take the heat.

That sounds fair right? Not jumping on a 'Bash-Will-Smith' bandwagon, genuinely think he is a loss to the depth of the squad.

Good Luck, Will and thank you for being a Saint! He did whatever the coaches asked of him. Never complained about switching positions and tried to transform his body to become an OLB, even at this late stage of his career. How anyone can bash him in anyway is beyond me.
