Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said all offseason that he wants quarterback Tony Romo to get more involved in the offensive game planning and play calling this year. Now Jones is comparing Romo’s understanding of offensive football with one of the brightest offensive minds in the game.

Jones said on KRLD radio in Dallas that former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells used to tell him that he loved Romo’s football intelligence, and Jones said Romo and Saints coach Sean Payton are similar in that respect.

“Bill knows Tony well and he has always had a real appreciation for Romo’s approach and his intellect relative to play calling relative to seeing and understanding the game,” Jones said, via ESPNDallas.com. “He’s unique in that way. In a way, Tony has some of the kind of skills you might see in a Sean Payton.”

Jones said Parcells told him that the idea to have Romo get more involved in running the offense is a good one.

“It is also just the flair for being able to see it and being creative out there,” Jones said. “In visiting with Bill, he thought it was something we really ought to take advantage of is Tony’s ability to see the field, call the plays and make more decisions out there.”

Jones sounds excited about giving Romo more control of the offense.

“Tony is going to be more involved in the making of the game plan and the calling of the plays than he’s been in the past in his career, and he’ll be significantly more involved. That’s a change,” Jones said.

Cowboys have to hope that’s a change for the better, and the Cowboys’ offense looks more like Sean Payton’s New Orleans offense.

Romo's never been a coach. It's entirely possible that he could be a better coach than QB... Just like Payton.

Hey, we very well could've ended up with Romo as our QB. I have no doubt that if Payton had gotten ahold of him back then he would be a much better QB than he is with Dallas.

If Tony has the same offensive mind as Payton, one of the NFLs undisputed, greatest minds, why the hell isn't Tony calling his own plays. Either Jerry Jones is an idiot or Jerry Jones is an idiot.

What this really means is that Tony Romo's days are numbered in Dallas. Anytime someone thinks they have any kind of power, Skeletor fires them.

I really feel sorry a bit for DC fans and even Romo.
Owner JJ needs to really just let his team and coaches and front office do their jobs he hired them to do. Really, step back and stop talking .
Maybe things will work out better there. This is the only thing JJ has not tried. Let it all play out and let the people do their jobs.

Maybe Jerry Jones is right. Sean Payton was also a terrible quarterback just like Tony Romo. So maybe Romo's future is in coaching, but it certainly isn't in winning Super Bowls as a quarterback!
