Tanner Clears Waivers

@LarryHolder: Just a heads up, WR Andy Tanner cleared waivers Friday. So the #Saints can add him to the practice squad if they so desire.

After seeing the receivers for both the Patriots and Jets the other night, I'd say they're crazy not to have snatched up Tanner. Those receivers couldn't catch a football with a net.

I don't think there was much doubt that he would clear waivers. I also doubt that the Saints will sign him to the PS.

Tanner is not in their long-term plans, with Joe Morgan presumably returning next season. I think Loomis will just keep his number on the Rolodex in case of injury.

Re: Tanner Clears Waivers

How can Joe Morgan return to something he never was a part of for more than a game or two.

I'd keep Tanner over Morgan.

Tanner has paid his dues. Morgan has paid... well he's paid Doctors' salaries. ;-]]

Tanner mustn't be an NFL type receiver. I sure hope he catches on with somebody like San Diego, Oakland or Kansas City.

Re: Tanner Clears Waivers

I'm happy declaring my ignorance on this one. From what I have seen of Tanner versus what I have seen of some of the depth in some of the 32 NFL Teams, I have no idea why he doesn't catch on somewhere.

Ok, New Orleans is stacked with depth. But teams like Jacksonville, Oakland, San Diego, Kansas and even New England at the moment (!) are in dire need of anyone decent. Why are they not even trying him out? Bizarre.

Pardon the comparison please...

Tanner's story is similar to Tebow's story.... Very athletic, very driven, easy to admire; just doesn't quite excel enough at any one skill set to justify a spot.

Bill Belichick has lost his brain. Tanner would be a big improvement over the bumbling stumbling Dobson, imho.

Dobson will get it together. I just hope it's not before the Saints have to play them at Gillette.

And it's a really good thing you are not in the Saints' front office. I believe Loomis and Payton feel slightly differently about that.

Re: Tanner Clears Waivers

Tanner runs good routes and catches passes. I believe if you put him in your regular rotation of WR's on gameday, he will make some plays and move the chains. Someone just has to give him that shot. Stills and Toon are just bigger, faster, and have more upside. The staff likes Meachem and hopes he still has something left. If he doesn't pan out or one of the other WR's goes down for an extended period, Tanner will be back with the Saints. The five RB's on a roster, in a pass first offense, that doesn't use the last two for much of anything, is more of a head scratcher for me. I know the argument, but the Saints are REALLY hurting to dress DLinemen at the moment and who knows when Bunkley or Foster will be back.

Tanner isn't what some people think he is. He's just not a starter in this league. Even if he is a fan favorite.

As far as the Pats, they need T.O. or Moss.

Tanner plays almost exactly the same game as Lance Moore and Moore is a very good #2 wideout. I predict he'll be back on the roster within 3 weeks, unless somebody else signs him.

His skill set is similar but the level in which he does it isn't. Tanner is not a number 2 in the NFL. He's a 5th or 6th option.

In 2005 a lot of people probably thought the same about Moore. He bounced around from the roster to the PS too, and didn't get the chance to prove himself until a couple years later. It's all about opportunity.

Pretty much yup. While there isn't much that separates Number 1 from Number 4 in the NFL, Its a huge gap to make up. That is why a player can go from great to mediocre in one season by just losing a 1/2 step or 3/4"

Or maybe it's just that his agent sucks?
