RIP Bum Phillips
1 Attachment(s)
Oail Andrew “Bum” Phillips Jr., who spent half his adult life as a football coach and every waking moment as the personification of all things Texan, died Friday at his ranch in Goliad.
Phillips was three weeks past his 90th birthday and more than three decades removed from his heyday as head coach of the Oilers from 1975 through 1980. But he will be remembered as the personification of a time, a place and a team that remains deep in the hearts of everyone who saw them play. The end came on a cool autumn football weekend as Houston’s current pro team, the Texans, prepares to play Sunday with his son, Wade, serving as defensive coordinator. Family members said Wade Phillips visited with his father before rejoining the team for its trip to Kansas City. “Bum is gone to Heaven-loved and will be missed by all -great Dad,Coach, and Christian,” Wade Phillips, whose Twitter handle is @sonofbum, tweeted shortly after 10 p.m. Ultimate Texans » Houston icon Bum Phillips dies |

Bum Phillips Passes at Age 90

Bum Phillips, who helped turn the Houston Oilers into a playoff team in the mid-1970s and was a beloved figure in the state of Texas, died Friday at the age of 90, according to his son.
Wrote Wade Phillips, the Texans defensive coordinator, late Friday night: Wade Phillips ✔ @sonofbum Bum is gone to Heaven-loved and will be missed by all -great Dad,Coach, and Christian 10:01 PM - 18 Oct 2013 After coaching high school for many years, Phillips spent a number of seasons coaching in college, including apprenticing under Bear Bryant at Texas A&M before moving on to SMU and Oklahoma State. In the late 1960s, Sid Gillman hired Phillips as the defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers, and that's when Phillips was one of the first in the NFL to establish the 3-4 defensive scheme. http://sports.cbsimg.net/images/blog...s-10182013.jpg read more |

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
I mostly remember him from the Oilers, his trademark Stetson and his good ol' boy persona during interviews, :).
r.i.p. |
Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
I lived in Texas for a bit and my 2nd team quickly became the Oilers because of Bum. So I quickly loved when they all started coming over to the Saints.
RIP Coach. |
Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
RIP Bum :( I have an old shirt that he wore when he was coaching. He will surely be missed.

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
lets set the record straight
Phillips couldn't replicate the same success in New Orleans after being fired by the Oilers after the 1980 season. He never guided the Saints to a winning record going 27-42 in New Orleans, but Phillips did help put together one of the best draft classes in Saints history in 1981 by selecting players like Rickey Jackson, George Rogers, Frank Warren, Hoby Brenner, Jim Wilks and Hokie Gajan. Former New Orleans Saints coach Bum Phillips dies at 90 | NOLA.com saints - 1981–1985 1981 George Rogers RB Russell Gary DB Rickey Jackson LB Frank Warren DE Hoby Brenner TE Johnnie Poe DB Glen Redd LB Hokie Gajan RB Jim Wilks DE 1982 Lindsay Scott WR (Had to leave his all time bust pick in ) Brad Edelman G Morten Andersen K Tony Elliot NT 1983 Steve Korte C John Tice TE 1984 Jumpy Geathers DE Terry Hoage DB Joel Hilgenberg C Brian Hansen P 1985 Jim Dombrowski G Dalton Hilliard RB Rueben Mayes RB Pat Swilling LB Gill Fenerty RB Pat Swoopes NT 1986 was the Jim Mora era Ok he built the house Mora lived and thrived in. that is simple to see. So give credit were credit is due! He was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Archie got hosed and sent to Houston and we got Kenny the Snake Stabler in return. Now any one alive during that time period has to admit Kenny was very creative at losing a game and many fans suspected it was point spread driven. This to me is the biggest blemish in his time here. Rest in peace Bum and i will always remember you for the laughs and the team you helped build here. Oh yeah it took me a year to figure out Kenny and my wallet says thanks for keeping him as long as you did :) |

Rip Bum. I do have my memories of him, also have a poster with him and the team autographed.

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
R.I.P. Coach. You were one of a kind.

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
He definitely knew how to draft. That was all he did for us though. Seems like he just quit on us and started building a good ole boys club and made some horrible moves like trading Archie Manning for a washed up OT because it was one of his Oiler buddies.
By all accounts he was a great guy but he screwed us in his last years as our coach. By the end he was just collecting a pay check. |
Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
A really good guy. Deserves more credit than he gets.

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
Back when bein called bum was cool I guess but you will be missed.

Rest in a Good Laugh Coach.

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
Rest in Peace, Bum. I loved this guy and his quotes:
"Respect all, fear none" "There's two kinds of coaches, them that's fired and them that's gonna be fired." "The harder we played the behinder we got." "I never scrimmage Oilers against Oilers...what for? Houston isn't on our schedule." "Last year we knocked on the door. This year we beat on it. Next year we're going to kick the son of a ***** in." |

Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
hagan, I remember those anmes and looking at the list written out like, well yes. That was the origin of The Dome Patorl. PK Morten Anderson was in for the 3pts and many times, made the all or most of Saints score.
Barry,I remember some of the Bum quotes. The one about the two kinds of coaches is funny and true. Any word from Earl Campbell yet? He and Bum were close. They had a close coach -player relationship. Boutte, I think his heart was in the right place, but he simply could not repeat the Oilers magic years here . Many of the key guys were past their prime: Stabler, Campbell. I think Bum had the right idea after he retired, he really retired. He must have had pleasure for as the NFL goes in watching Wade do well as a DC. |

Nothing but good memories for me about Oail Andrew "Bum" Phillips.
The best nickname ever in the NFL. My hats off to you !! |
Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
RIP Bum. Have a lot of memories of the Saints under Bum, but him bringing over Kenny "Snake" Stabler, and Earl Campbell well past their prime stick out. As a kid, I had a black and gold snake, and when you shook it, it rattled. It was a Kenny Stabler snake toy!! Wish I still had it.

Faith Hope and Bum was the motto. The man who brought us Guido Merkins.
RIP Bum! |
Re: Bum Philips Passes at Age 90
As a young teen the family and I met him in Ruidoso, New Mexico one summer at a restaurant. He signed a couple things for us and treated us like family. Guess he was surprised to find Saints fans that knew who he was in the middle of no where.
