Payton finds Jets’ ability to run wild maddening

While citing a litany of reasons for an ugly 26-20 loss to the Jets, Saints coach Sean Payton lingered Monday on one factor longer than the others.

The uncharacteristic dropped passes, interceptions and penalties were irritating. Their inability to stop the run was maddening.

The Jets rushed 38 times for 198 yards — a season high for their offense and the New Orleans defense — even though defending the run was the Saints’ top priority.

“The thing that’s disappointing about yesterday is we knew getting off the bus that this was a team that was going to run the football,” Payton said. “They knew they were going to run the football, and I think everybody at MetLife Stadium knew they were going to run the football, and we weren’t able to stop them. That’s frustrating, and we have to look at why and make those corrections.”

Chris Ivory, whom New Orleans traded to New York during the April draft, rushed for 139 yards on 18 carries while breaking off 52- and 30-yard runs. Still, the Saints’ frustration was directed inward rather than outward.

“He had great numbers stat-wise, but there wasn’t anyone in his way most of the time he ran,” linebacker Curtis Lofton said. “That’s more on us. We didn’t do our jobs and execute the way we should execute, but (my) hat goes off to them. When it came down to it, they made the plays, and we didn’t do that.”

Despite ranking 10th in the NFL in total defense, New Orleans is tied for second-to-last in allowing 4.9 yards per carry. That number is not significantly better than the NFL-worst 5.2 yards opponents averaged in 2012, when the Saints shattered the league record for yards allowed.

Lofton said the problems against the Jets started before the snap.

I find Chris Ivory's ability to run wild against us maddening, too. I mean I was mad when I found out they let him go...and kept the bust to keep from having egg on their face so soon.

I was mad when i saw a 3rd string TE get the ball on a reverse, when the jets front 7 had been owning us all day
