According to @pff the Saints have the lowest number of missed tackles in the NFL this season.
2012 is so so long ago.

That's an important stat that any D would be proud of.

Does this put an end to the question "players or scheme"?

I guess not. But is sure seems we were running the wrong scheme last year eh?

I think a couple of myths have been jack-slapped by the Saints of late.

The myth that NFL success is all about the players, not the coaches. (see 2012 without Payton)

and

The myth that we had no talent on defense. (see the 2013 defense)

And to think Rob Ryan was without a job for barely 5 minutes ...

I think we beginning to see the light on a couple things.

Sean Payton drafting SMART players.

Meaning, we may of not had a smart D-Coordinator to scheme things until Rob Ryan came, I think its quite interesting how injured this defense has really been this year and hardly anything has changed, its the same production no matter who you insert.

With that said, thats similar to how some of the best defenses in the NFL have operated, insert anyone here, nothing changes. I like it.

Yes, even last year when they were the worst defense in the league, they still had plenty of talent. Lofton/Hawthorne were great signings, they didn't suddenly become bad players. Galette had always shown a ton of talent as a pass rusher, Hicks and Jordan were flashing big-time potential, etc.

You could point to Vaccaro and Lewis in the secondary as the players that put them over the top and really made it solid, but I would argue that even without those guys this would still be a pretty decent group.

Blows my mind how incompetent Spagnuolo turned out to be, although I guess in hindsight it shouldn't have been when you see the debacle he led the Rams into. That guy is like Jim Haslett 2.0.

Maybe, but I think Lewis has become the best free agent signing we've had since Drew Brees. At least by his play this season. He's been the shutdown corner that we have been looking for this team for ages. I can see why Steelers' fans were pissed when they lost him.

I really thought the Spags hire would turn out great. He obviously wasn't a good HC, but he was a very good DC with the Giants if I remember correctly.

as much as i hate stats like this with out seeing the definitions used i have to agree that this area of the game has improved big time

I agree. Most of the PFF stuff we read isn't qualified with a basis.

But this particular stat uses the same definitions it used last year when we were one of the worst, if not the worst, in the NFL.

Re: PFF: Fewest Missed Tackles in NFL: Saints!

as long as i do not see lynch run us over monday night he did last time then i am happy.

i hope the defense is forced to watch that over and over again and in between viewing they get pie thrown in there face. that was one of the all time worse plays i have ever seen from a saints defense. i have seen them all and that was top 10 crap right there.

like any of the really good backs in the nfl you really do expect to stop them completely but limit the impact they have. so far the saints have done a great job. well except the turd they laid in the meadow lands.

limit and keep lynches impact in this next game and i will say A

the plus i save for season end

history is not a good indicator of the future, though it is directional. I'd like to see what happens in the wind, rain and cold of Seattle. Then hopefully in the snow, wind and cold of the Meadowlands.

That is an awesome stat !!!!!

Especially if you buy into "defenses win championships", either way defense or offense we are strong on both sides of the ball.

I think the old adage defense wins championships is outdated.

I think a team needs to be at least good in all 3 phases to win it all.

A crappy defense, offense, or special teams will probably keep you from the prize.
