New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton talks about loss to Seahawks

Coach Sean Payton's thoughts on the game:
“Obviously, it’s a difficult loss. We didn’t do a lot of things well in that game. We’ll have to come back on a short week now and get ready to play another real good football team at home on Sunday. We have to do a better job as coaches, starting with me. There are too many things that we didn’t do or do well enough, to give ourselves the opportunity to win. Credit Seattle, they made the plays they needed to and they were certainly the better team tonight.”

Do you immediately put this game behind you and get ready for Sunday:

“Yeah, as best you can. It takes a little bit of time but I think the key is the short schedule. Coming off a game like this, we’ll be sure to get the corrections made. There’s a lot to look at obviously. There are a lot of things that we didn’t do well. So we need to move on to it.”

Did you think the worst when Seattle scored that early touchdown on the fumble:

“Hypothetically, obviously those are plays that swing games but we had opportunities. We felt like we had some opportunities late in the second quarter. We got the score but we just didn’t do enough offensively. We certainly didn’t do enough in converting third downs and staying on the field. Defensively we had problems stopping them (Seattle) in the first half. In the kicking game, I thought that we were below average as well.”

How big a factor was the crowd noise:

“The first play of the game was a run that went the other direction. Not everyone obviously got the redirect. The noise impacts certain plays. I don’t know if that was the difference tonight. It can be the difference on third down. It can certainly be the difference when it comes to protection but I don’t if I would point to that tonight nor would you point to the weather, really. With everything we prepared and heard about, it ended up being a pretty clear evening.”

No excuses, we got beat by a very good, well prepared team, it stinks that we looked that bad in just about all phases of the game.

Hopefully, this beat down helps refocus the team. Carolina will be licking their chops since, like us, they control their own destiny.

I would have liked if we gave them a good game but that was pathetic. We will be seeing them again in Seattle in the playoffs so our team better be ready.

Not necessarily, neworleans could end up the number 5 seed and have to play dallas, which would leave seattle playing against either detroit or sanfrancisco. If sanfrancisco makes it you better believe they will play hard and could possibly beat them. In that scenario I believe neworleans could host the nfc championship against sanfrancisco due to best record. I am hoping for this one as we owe the niners big for our last playoff loss to them.

Drew calls a lot at the line. With the noise and designer ear plugs (thanks Favre)... I doubt that was entirely possible so at the line adjustments were not as proficient as they need to be.

Explains how they were nearly always in the right defense, Drew read it but couldn't change the play confidently.

Seattle needs to be arrested, because they raped the crap out of us last night!

I gained a lot of respect for Seattle last night. They out coached us,out played us,and down right just humiliated us on national TV. We looked absolutely pathetic last night. I believe our play calling was the biggest culprit in our loss last night.

This is the kind of loss where you don't even know where to begin to assess what went wrong. I hope they can at least use this loss as motivation to try harder. I thought with how important this game was and with extra time to game plan we would have put up a better fight.

Joker, I hear what your saying, but that's Ohio State...

I'm an SEC homer that thinks the National Title Game was played this past weekend; best of the best hitting, full speed, week-end/week-out...

For my interests, I want to walk up to the BMF in the house and put it all on the table, knowing I beat the best...

We are a finesse, clever indoor team...

Our O-line lacks the physicality to line up and power rush the football...

Geez, their linebackers were as fast as Darren Sproles...

Lofton ran like he had dookie in his shorts...

Zach Strief, omgosh, looked like a special-ed Sumo Wrestler, D-League...

Terrible, just terrible effort...

The early momentum killers like putting Ingram in the game, Graham's drop, Meachem's drop, and White's failed interception sealed our fate.

Had each of these missed opportunities happened or not, we could have gained momentum and possibly gone the distance.

Was the kicking game below average in y'all's opinion? I thought Morestead was doing good. Guess its just because we saw him all game

I'm not sure what the exact scenario would be, but home field in the playoffs is determined by highest seed, not by best record. So if the Saints are #5 seed and SF is anything other than #6 below us, then we would go to SF, not have them come to the Dome. While it's interesting, the SF-in-the-Superdome scenario with us as 5 seed, would require NO home teams to win at home in the two rounds of NFC playoffs, not a single one, until the NFC Championship....that's kinda doubtful.

I have been so depressed I never thought of that. That is very likely to happen and thank you I see some light now because after watching what they did to us I know we don't have a prayer at Seattle in the playoffs when it is a lot colder. Damn I cant believe im saying go niners. Im back to being depressed again.

No, the kicking game was fine. Payton just wanted the pain distributed evenly, I think. It just SEEMED humiliating in all phases.

That's what I thought watching the game --- but that isn't what Drew said in his post-game presser. He said there were no communication problems. Maybe, protecting Payton's decision to use the ear plugs?

Also, apparently, Payton called Farve to ask him how to handle the noise? ANd, Farve suggested the ear-plugs. After the beat-down we put on Farve in the 2009 playoff game, why in the hell would Farve help Payton, especially after the bounty-gate thing? I bet Farve still has bruises.

I've got more questions than answers here.

Only problem with this assumption is that we're supposed to be a very good team and a well coached and prepared team and we get shown up by a 2nd year QB? Whatever helps you sleep at night I guess. Personally, I was embarrassed, and I think the team should also be embarrassed. You want all the soft, finesse team stuff to go away?? That ain't the way to do it. I tell you what, I wouldn't want to go to war with most of these guys, that's for sure, cause you wouldn't last very long. You can try to put lipstick on a pig all day long, but at the end of the day, it's still a pig.
